That's a great wine and a fair price - by being patient and lucky, you might find it for less, but it will be a challenge. If you know the provenance is good - I would go for them.Alex M wrote:Contemplating 6 x QdN 2003 @ £45. Any opinions?

Have a little punt at Christies sale on the 8th Sept. before you buy - lot 26 - but don't forget that buyer's premium & VAT will add 40% to the hammer price (and that there's a case of Warre '03 bundled in the same lot...)Contemplating 6 x QdN 2003 @ £45. Any opinions?

Re: Latest buy
This might possibly be the first time in Port history that someone in the UK has had to pay more than someone in the US for the same Port. My 2003 Noval, purchased in small batches, averages $37.47/bottle.Alex M wrote:Contemplating 6 x QdN 2003 @ £45. Any opinions?
Nevertheless, it is a fantastic Port and well worth £45. I got lucky with my purchases because Noval changed importers (or distributors, I forget which) and the former company dumped a significant amount of back stock on the market for cheap.

Re: Latest buy
I purchased the QdN 2003 in the end, I managed to justify it to myself that near perfect provenance is worth the premium. Currently looking at 6xVesuvio 1997 at just under £26 per bottle. My aim is to acquire 600 bottles by my 30th birthday. I'm currently on 154 with 7 years to go giving an average of 5.3 per month.

As luck would have it, I have six half bottles of Croft LBV 04 in front of me now with a label saying "give these to a poor soul who needs to get rid of six dodgy bottles of Cockburn 1960".

We had a good excuse to buy some port, so decided we needed more port with some age on it. That resulted in:
9x Fonseca 1970
2x Cockburn 1967
1x Cockburn 1970
Almost at the same time there was an auction with many lots of Niepoort 1977. I never win at these things, so decided to put a bid on a couple of lots. Ended up with:
18x Niepoort 1977
2x Calem 1977 (came with a lot of Niepoort 77).
Quite pleased now.

After running out, and then doing some scavenging on the internet, I was able to locate 4 x 2003 Taylor LBV for $19.99 each.
Still my favorite LBV. I've had better LBVs but I can't find any of them for sale, so they don't count.

Re: Latest buy
It means that I have enough bottles from that particular vintage to see me through the next 30 years of anticipated drinking. It sounds a lot, but it isn't. If you think about it, drinking one bottle of 1980 every couple of years or so means that I would only need a case and a half. I've still fewer bottles of 1963 (30 - I drink a lot of them) and 1983 (7) than I would like, but I nearly have a balanced cellar that will only need to be topped up with newly released wines every year from now on. So far this year I've received 6-packs of Taylor 2009 and Vesuvio 2009 and I'm hoping to get some halves of Skeffington 2009 soon.Chris Doty wrote:Can you 'splain dis to me?AHB wrote:1980 now filled in my cellar. Re: Latest buy
My computer tells me that as of today I should have 103.0624 bottles of 1980 in my cellar, against an actual number of only 87. However, as I have 263 bottles of 1970 against a computed need of 229.4640, the shortfall is not critical.
This is based on a requirement to yield 72 bottles of vintage port each year, of which 64 must be 30 years old or more, 48 over 40, 24 over 50, 12 over 60, 7 over 70, 4 over 80, 2 over 90 and 1 over 120. At least once in every decade, one of the 120+ bottles must be 200 years old, and another over 160.
Every vintage year is weighted to reflect its relevance, the overall average being 1. 1970 is heavily weighted at 4.4, whereas 1980 ranks in my estimation at just 1.6

The Cockburn is undoubtedly corked, but as I can't taste "corked" i should be good! Realistically, I wanted to at least see what the fuss was about.

Re: Latest buy
Purchased an old faithful from BBR that has suprisingly let me down a couple of times recently (when purchased from other sources).
Paid a £15ish premium but this will be the acid test as to whether previous disappointments were a matter of provenance or whether the wine is simply entering a bad phase...
I'll bring it out at one of the tastings over the next 3 weeks.

Last weekend at auction (put in bids beforehand) I won:
- 6x Smith Woodhouse VP 1980 (case of 12 split with another portlover);
- 6x Ferreira 1985 VP;
- 9x Kopke 40 YO Tawny (bottled in 1980, very curious how they will turn out);
- 3x Kopke "Full Rich" Madeira.
price on the lot with the Kopke 40 YO and Madeira was very low, so if 2 of 3 of the 9 bottles of Tawny turn out ok, I'm still very happy with that lot.

That's a nice purchase Gerwin.
I'm interested how the 40YO will turn out after 30 years in the bottle.

Surprisingly , it was simply excellent! considering it was the worst looking bottle from the bunch (quite some seepage it seemed) it was amazingly tasty. I opened it last Friday (28th Oct), on the day they arrived. At first it was very nice, but had quite a lot of heat (too much) from the alcohol.smisse wrote:That's a nice purchase Gerwin.

On Saturday (29th Oct) this bottle was finished off after a dinnerparty, where I also brought the B&I 1970 VP, and at that time the heat was very much reduced / integrated, and what was left was a fantastic Tawny, with a lot of honey, nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts) in both nose and taste, and a finish of over a minute!

I'll try and put together a tn on this one too.
