International Port Day

Center for Wine Origins has declared Jan 27 to be "International Port Day" and is encouraging tastings and trumpets. Anyone have more information on this? And should we plan virtual (or actual) tastings on this day?

It's an international Something day every day of the year, and although I am very much in favour of promoting Port wine to the world, I really don't see how this is going to do it. But I am happy to be proved wrong...

I was actually thinking about an introductory tasting with a few non-port drinkers and doing a tour of the different styles using port available at the supermarkets and one VP/colheita.

Was thinking:

Ruby: Cockburn Special Reserve (waitrose/tesco)
LBV: Warre 2001 (waitrose)
Crusted: Graham 2003 (tesco)
10 yr Tawny: Sainsbury own-label
Supermarket VP: Tesco 94 or Sainsbury 03
Colheita: ?
VP: Churchill 85
Perhaps also something older with good pedigree as well!

I must admit i agree...particularly as the organisation promoting it seems to have called it a day after making the announcement. Still, i suppose it gives me a good excuse to get blind drunk with a few friends drinking port. But if i ever tried to bill it as anything to do with a "hashtag", i think my friends would disown me!

Looks like it is IVDP funded - at least in part.

How We Began
The Center for Wine Origins was founded in 2005 by the wine growing regions of Champagne, France, and Porto, Portugal.

These are both regulated by the European system of appellations, designed to ensure authenticity and quality for consumers. The Center represents the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), the trade association that represents all the grape growers and houses of Champagne; and the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto (IVDP), the trade association that represents all the grape growers and houses in Porto and the Douro Valley. The campaign is financed with support from the European Union, as well as France and Portugal.

What We Do
We are headquartered in Washington, D.C., and are involved in many activities aimed at educating consumers, policymakers and the media about the importance of keeping wine labels accurate. We also aim to offer better resources for consumers so that they are able to make informed choices when selecting their wines.

The Center for Wine Origins was created to educate Americans about the importance of location when it comes to wine, and to gain greater protection of wine place names in the U.S.

While excellent wine is produced around the world, it is important to know where your wine comes from. If you are unsure, we encourage you to ask and demand that a wine’s true origin be clearly identified on its label. Truth-in-labeling is important so you can make informed decisions when buying and enjoying wines.

The place where a wine comes from is one of its most important defining characteristics. Yet, in the U.S., wine place names ”“ including Champagne and Port ”“ are misused on wine labels, making it difficult for wine lovers to select an authentic wine from a particular region.

I think it is a legit and I have seen Oscar Quevedo promote the day on Facebook. Surely there can't be any harm in joining in on a day to promote the enjoyment of Port?

That's exactly my point. Whether I join a tasting that day or not doesn't do anything for the wider promotion of Port. I am already a fan and don't need a day like this to open a nice bottle. The people who are new to Port will not be reached with this initiative, because it has no meaning to them. That said, I am happy to drink a glass of Port on the 27th. Hate to be a bad sport.
