I'm not sure what number offline we are up to - but does anyone fancy meeting up late next Spring in London for an offline with a theme of "1908 Horizontal".
I confess that I am a little short of the recent 1908 vintage in my cellar, but I would be interested in opening one of my bottles if others could also obtain some.
Even if there were only 5-6 of us and only 2-3 bottles it would still be quite an experience.
Anyone interested?

Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Unfortunately, all of my 1908's are lying down in the "Not Yet Ready" area of my cellar so I would be unable to contribute a bottle. However, I would be happy to contribute a reasonable amount of cash or some other ports from other vinatges.
Incidentally, wine-searcher have a Niepoort 1908 for £998

I am serious that I plan to open one of my bottles of 1908 next year. I would love to open it in the company of other port lovers - ideally those who would be able to bring another bottle of 1908 port to drink alongside it but equally with anyone willing to make a contribution towards its replacement with something equally special in my cellar.
To date it looks like its Derek and I. Does no-one else want to join us?

I will brive to the south end of the M20 to taste a 1908
Hopefully we can find more 1908's but can I suggest that it may be more practical to work on the basis of a pre-WW1 line-up rather than limiting it to a single vintage of that age?

1908s, Taylor and Cockburn
My one tasting of 1908s, Taylor and Cockburn, alas didn’t impress.

I've not tried a 1908 vintage port yet but I'm prepared to be disappointed. By the time a port reaches its 100th anniversary it has got to be a gamble whether it has lasted the distance or not.
However, its worth opening one of them to find out. If you've already tried a Taylor and a Cockburn then I'll open a Dow and see how that has lasted.
I'm also happy to expand the theme of this proposed tasting to be a pre-WWI tasting if that means that more people have bottles that they could contribute.

1908 tasting?
My next visit to the UK is currently scheduled to be from the last weekend of January to the first weekend of February (when Uncle Tom is in Thailand). And my only remaining pre-WW1 port is a Taylor 1912.
Too old?
Hello,
Many thanks for the open invitation. My experience of these old buffers is that they tend to be a little too sweet and gentle for me (hence my appreciation of the '66 Fonseca recently, which still had some tannins with which to kick me).
I'm inclined to sit this one out in the hope some younger things will come along to entertain me...

Alex,
did you think about a fee for anyone who doesnt bring one? Maybe with the sources you guys are having on the island, we could buy a couple.

I haven't really thought about a fee for anyone who doesn't have a bottle but would be interested in attending. However, I'm more than happy to discuss such things by private message. There are a number of these bottles available (at a price) on wine-searcher so it should not be too difficult to source additional vintage ports.
