Best Port restaurant/bar/lounge in NYC

Post by Miguel Simoes »

For those in the NYC area, have you been impressed by the Port offerings of a particular restaurant/bar/lounge in NYC?

I typically find a base offering at most places (a couple of tawnies, base level rubies - or one/two VPs at higher end restaurants) but cant recall ever being truly impressed by the breadth/depth of what I found.

Being NYC, there should be at least one such place. If you can point it out to me I'd appreciate it!

When i lived in NY in 2008, i used to enjoy the Carnegie Club on 56th. I was not an avid port drinker back then, but i'm fairly sure i recall a good 20yr served by the glass, as well as bottle options. And obviously a nice selection of cigars.

I';m trying to get some ny bars sorted out and i'll let you know when i do.

carnegie club definitely has a nice cigar list (albeit 300% increase) along with a 400% mark up on ports, but they did have a dow 85 last year for 380$

the 10 yr they usually mix between taylor and , I seem to recall warres, they also have a bunch of regular tawnies and rubies.

Higher end restaurants also typically offer some VP by the glass.

For my birthday the wife gifted herself by taking me to Bouley, where I had a glass of Grahams 85 (v nice, btw). The thing that stood out to me there was their selection of Madeira's, which the Sommelier was also fairly excited about (i had never had a sommelier push Madeira on me before!). While they still have the Madeiras, the Port list is shorter now... and there is no mention to any by the glass http://www.davidbouley.com/bouley-resta ... 5-2013.pdf

I have never been to the Carnegie Club. Will have to check it out.

I have been to Club Macanudo. As I look at their drinks list http://www.clubmacanudo.com/pdfs/Dinner ... s-Menu.pdf, I notice that they have both Taylor and Fonseca 10-...-40 yr tawny and a couple of VPs by the glass.

Ideally, though, there would be a place where you could choose from 5+ options of VP by the glass and, like Macanudo, more than just one brand of 10-20-30 yr tawny.

It is that "ideal" that I had in mind when I started this thread!

I used to frequent Smith & Wollensky on 49th and 3rd. They used to have a relatively small selection of ports, mostly by the bottle, which were reasonably priced. They were also quite happy for me to phone up, pay for a bottle of port over the phone with my credit card and to decant it for me 4-6 hours before I arrived.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

2026: Quinta das Carvalhas 80YO Tawny
