Gould-Campbell 07: drinking well now nor or already closed?

Post by AW77 »

I have an odd bottle the Gould-Campbell 07 in my cellar which I don't think I want to hatch until it reaches maturity in 20 years time.
What do you think: would it be drinking well now or would it already have closed?

And if I would be still good to drink, what would you recommend as decanting time?

The right thing to do is probably to wait. Have you the strength of character to wait?

I don't recall having drunk the Gould Campbell 2007 recently, but judging by the Vesuvio and Lamelas I've drunk in the last couple of weeks I would expect it to be very enjoyable at the moment. I've had a few 2007 vintage ports this year and they have all been very enjoyable. Personally, I would say if you don't want to keep the bottle you will really enjoy it if you open it and drink it soon. Decanting time is probably not important - you can drink these straight after opening them they are still that young.

AHB, I think you've tasted the Noval 07 lately - is that still similarly open? Some report that it has started to go to sleep...

Thanks for your comments so far.

The Symington's Vintage Port Site says this about the GC07:
"this is a stylish Port that will evolve for a decade and offer prime drinking from 2017 to 2030"
http://www.thevintageportsite.com/speci ... d+Campbell

Would this support the notion that it is sleeping right now?

I don't think that is the Vintage Port Site saying that - it is Jay Miller of Wine Advocate saying that. He also says of the Smith Woodhouse that " It should be one of the longer lived wines of the vintage with 12-15+ years of aging potential and a drinking window extending through 2037". Read into that what you will...

I'm fine with that statement, though one could quibble about relativity.
Jay Miller of Wine Advocate wrote:... with 12-15+ years of aging potential
wait... what? :?
Jay Miller of Wine Advocate wrote:... and a drinking window extending through 2037

So let me get this straight... one of the longer lived Vintage Ports of the 2007 vintage will only age for 12-15 years, and has a drinking window that ends at 30 years?

Does this guy know anything about Vintage Port at all?

I did have the 2007 Noval earlier this year and rather enjoyed it. It is different from the way it was a couple of years ago, but I didn't feel it was closing down.

Thank you all for your comments. It's interesting that there can be so many conflicting assessments about a port. This shows that wine is a very personal matter in which everyone has to find their own approach.

I for myself have decided to wait and not to open this bottle now.
