Port for sale at auction

Interesting how Strakers charge a flat rate Buyer's Premium of £8.40 (inc VAT) per lot-good for cases but less so for small lots (and there are quite a few individually lotted bottles of Port). As Tom says, not much of interest-which is a pity as I'm driving down the M4 the following Friday and so would be able to pop in and collect if successful. I assume interest in the Niepoort '75 is more for rarity value as the '75s haven't got much else to recommend them have they?

Correct.

I'm thinking the '75 vintage deserves just one horizontal - in it's 40th year; but I only have ten at present, so need a few more..

I think it should have been in its fifteenth year, 1990. But I’m notoriously sceptical of the ’75s.

If this is to be done the wines should be purchased now. 1975 is currently priced reasonably for what it is. Two years from now the price will be double and the wine will be slightly worse than it is now.

I vote yes. Tom should start a new planning thread so that people can declare what they have.

Unless it's a coincidence (which it's not) then that Niepoort '75 has popped up on bid for wine. Talking of bfw I noticed that the three bottles of G70 didn't last long a someone from here perchance?! Anyone having an interest in the bonhams sale next week? I see that the buyer's premium has been increased.

Sadly I was trumped on the Ni75 at Strakers, so it's reported re-appearance at BFW (which I can't be bothered with..) - is no surprise. Derisory bids would be appropriate..!

However, I'm quietly confident that I can secure an ex cellars bottle if I push something amusing from my hoard in Dirk's direction..

I will take Derek's advice shortly, so we can launch a '75 horizontal without paying top dollar for stock.

Things I've bought on BFW: a bottle of G77, smashed in transit (packed in a little bit of bubble wrap and a tight cardboard tube); some Ni97s that were not described correctly (i.e., leakers with brown sticky stuff all over the capsule).

Great isn't it.

I note that the price paid at Strakers for the N75 and Beresford 80 was £68.40 (inc BP) and so if DRT is able to take a chunk out of this that would be mildly satisfying!

We seem to be into auction season as there are a number upcoming with one or two interesting lots (to my untrained eye). Anyone planning to take an interest-I don't wish to stand on any forumite's toes? I'm intending attending the Drewatts auction in a couple of weeks. I wonder how different experience it will be to Bonhams last month, when I turned up half an hour before the Port lots and there were only two 'punters' in the room and one of those disappeared before the Port lots! Was also slighly amusing when the auctioneer seeing what he felt was a derisory bid for two dozen Vargellas opined 'that doesn't seem like much for 24 bottles' which prompted the one other chap in the room to put up his hand and secure the lot!

My judgement is based on a lot of bottles for a tenner each. I think Mr Broadbent was nice about it too. In fairness I think it was fading when I last had it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable and good value delivery firm that I can use to transport a stash of bottles I secured at the Hartleys auction last week? Their recommendation-Mailboxes, want to charge a fee in excess of £200 (including packing)!

Incidentally, mention of the Croft 82 in the previous posts reminds me that that the hammer price for a case of 12 at Drewatts yesterday was £200-which didn't seem bad value (and less than my quoted transportation quote above!).

Thanks for the responses-went with Benelux for a far more agreeable price (chap there was 'flabbergasted' by what mailboxes had quoted). Seems Benelux collect from most of the provincial auction houses. Interestingly, the chap there mentioned that they had seen a noticeable increase in Port traffic in recent times. Perhaps people are finally waking up!

He gives a very reasonable and fully insured service to Northern Ireland too. Do let him know that you mentioned him on the Port Forum, it can only help to inform people that they're being recommended here.

Can I suggest that we keep in touch via email / PM on upcoming auctions? Bigwoods, Straker Chadwick, Sotheby's (only one lot I can find, 6 mags of W85) and Tennants are all coming up. I have a few odd lots at each of these in mind. Let's make sure we aren't bidding against each other.

£80 a go for 66 Graham doesn't seem a steal to me. The 94 had VAT or duty to pay I think which again is not so far off retail/broker prices.

The VAT was on the Vesuvio I think. Which went for £155 (+ £30ish).
I'm old too. I just don't expect any bargains any more.
