Is this more pedantic than we need to be? C'mon geeks. Lemme hear your thoughts on this one. My view? It's just silly.

This is just silly. You are right as usual.
I think that if we are going to have such things as 'Oxford commas', and accept that these are a matter of personal taste or style, then we must also be able to accept that the separation of verbal phrases in compound predicates (!) is likewise a question of the author's or editor's own taste.
If I were Gus Lubin and attempting to defend the English language from depredation, I might start elsewhere. Like anywhere but the USA.

No, I agree with the author. All of those examples look wrong to me.

I do not claim perfection, and I am sure that I mis-use commas at least occasionally, but I do try to use them correctly. There's no comma between John eating a slice and drinking a bottle, nor should there be.

It is interesting that only one half of the house of Wiseman has posted here on the comma debate.

Interesting use of a comma. Should you have used another? "And disagree" appears to be a parenthetical clause, requiring a terminating comma.

"Dual in the City" was the headline in a commercial I just saw about a two team track meet. Unless they're running a pair of meets at the same time, I think someone goofed.

Two schools each pick athletes to represent them in the meet. In each event contested, the athletes score points for their school based on place. The school with the most points accumulated is the winner.

Hmm. Oxford thinks otherwise:

Less is also used with numbers when they are on their own and with expressions of measurement or time, e.g.:

His weight fell from 18 stone to less than 12.

Their marriage lasted less than two years.

Heath Square is less than four miles away from Dublin city centre

I wondered whether people would think that “40 floor” should have been a compound adjective, “40-floor”. Presumably your silence on this matter was caused by you not seeing it as an error.

That there is no such thing as a split infinitive. I understood that the concept was invented by one or other nineteenth-century public school headmaster who, observing the single-word infinitive of Latin, decided that the two-word infinitive of English should follow exactly the same rule.
Whatever your personal preference is (in Julian's case, this is generally communicated with the word 'Yuk'), it's not a rule.

Better, or best? You might have meant the latter, but it is more likely that you will claim that you meant the latter.

And I am less skilled at BBcode on Tapatalk than on a desktop. (Actually, I typed it correctly, not knowing that Tapatalk would substitute characters. And then I didn’t check my work. Tut tut.)
