Anything but Port, this includes all wines other than fortified wines (which have their own section) even if they call themselves Port. There is a search facility for this part of the forum.

1986 Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal

Post by LGTrotter »

Whilst furtling where I keep my wine I discovered this, making 5 bottles in total from the eighties. As this meant I would have lied to Alex about the numbers I have of eighties clarets I thought I would rectify this by drinking one. And Daniel said it was claret weekend.

Darker than I would have expected, but I understand this is common for the 86s, no sign of bricking at the centre but brownish at the rim. Smelling of new shoes. Appears quite viscous. The tannins are beginning to soften but no hurry to drink this wine, a bit hot, a bit smokey. Not quite piercing enough on the palate. A very pleasant wine but somehow atypical of claret. Bet Parker would like it. I do too, but it reminds me of those zombie wines (or do I mean Frankenstien?) that seem to continue in an unnerving way, relentless, but somehow not quite alive.

It has not inspired a score yet.
