1947 Warre

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

An unknown bottle bought at auction some time ago. The level was mid-shoulder. The cork had been attacked by cork weevil but was clearly branded "WARRE VINTAGE 1947".

A deep amber-orange colour, 25% opaque. Very little on the nose, some faint hints of oxidised port and some hints of the brandy. Soft on the palate, delicate and floral initially but with some nice bitter orange on the late palate. A fairly short aftertaste mostly of Seville Orange. Overall this is a surprisingly elegant wine which shows rather like a nice 10 year old tawny. What it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in elegance and texture. 85/100. Drunk 16-Jul-14. Decanted ½ hour.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
