1990 Pichon Baron

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Deep red colour with a firm rim; 80% opaque. Surprisingly muted nose, some gentle cedar but little else. Hollow entry but lovely mid-palate that is full of modest, sweet fruit and charcoal tannins. Lovely late palate, gentle and wonderfully balanced. A huge explosion of delicately nuanced but fabulous flavours on the aftertaste and finish. Great length - but how on earth do you rate such an unbalanced flavour and profile? Great elegance. 89/100. Drunk 17-Jul-14. Decanted 2½ hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

This is a so-so note for one of the wines of 1990 touted as equal to the first growths. I wonder if it simply didn't suit you, interesting that in some ways this note is similar to Parker's, but you have scored it eight points lower. No criticism intended, quite the reverse in fact.
