NV Barbeito Coronation Boal Madeira for Fortnum & Mason

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

From a half bottle. Bottled in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Queen's Coronation in 2013. Amber orange in colour with a strong nose of VA, iodine and sea salt. The iodine and salt dominate the palate, but the palate spreads out well and envelops the tongue and has a lovely balance between acidity and sweetness. There is a delicious explosion of flavour on the aftertaste. Lovely madeira. 89/100. Drunk 04-Sep-14. Decanted 1 hour.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Very interesting. Was this a limited bottling or did you only buy it recently?

It was bought on the day it was drunk. It is a limited bottling from 2013 but Fortnum's seem to have plenty left.

I must point that this was not a half bottle if it was one of these. I think this is particularly pertinent given your comments about bottle sizes elsewhere.

That is what it was. Thank you - it was an imp and not a half bottle!

I confess, by the time the madeira appeared I was happily helping myself to the 100 year-old port and was paying very little attention to anything else.
