1985 Chateau Lynch Bages

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

A distant (in a geographical, not familial, sense) relative came to visit this evening so we opened what was hoped to be a decent drink.

Deep and rich in colour. This had a terrific nose of mature cab sauv - lots of barnyard and autumn fruit dampened by early morning fog. On the palate this was dense and hugely flavoured, with gorgeous sweet fruit and a terrific depth. Long and lingering fruit on the aftertaste and wonderful sweet fruity finish. This really is a fine bottle of claret, just a shame this was my last one. Delicious! 95/100.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Hmm, Lynch Bages in the vintages from 1985 to 1990 is as good as a Premier Cru! This was a funny period for Lynch Bages where they were very consistently top notch! Usually they are not consistently as good. Have not had the 1985 recently but it is a splendid classic Bordeaux at the start of its peak. Sadly it was your last bt! But you may find this in the auction market from time to time.
