New York February 14 1970 VP Tasting
New York February 14 1970 VP Tasting
If we do a 1970 tasting sometime in late winter-early spring 2008 (which I think would be interesting and for which I could supply all or most of the bottles, depending on what folks have), I would volunteer my home in Brooklyn, which is in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood and about a half-hour from mid-town Manhattan on the F line.
I have on hand Graham, Fonseca, Dow, Croft, Quinta do Cachao and Santos Junior (in magnums). I could also supply Delaforce, Kopke, Noval, Sandeman, Taylor and (of all the strange things) Taylor Quinta de Vargellas.

1970s in Brooklyn: fantastic
AHB is in Boston the second week of February: if it were soon after that weekend (being the 9th/10th February) it might be possible for him to play. But I’m in whenever it is.In a since-edited post here jdaw1 wrote:Fantastic. Yes please. Do start a new thread in the Organising off-lines section, proposing exactly this, and suggesting a date or dates after 11th February (’cause I’m in the UK and Boston first two weeks of February). Please PM a link to the new thread to those who might be interested, including jdaw1, AHB, Jeff, Raveesh, EricD, Bob Heckart, mittvin, mzimberg, seth1917, and hwangs. Here jfacciol wrote:If we do a 1970 tasting sometime in 2008 (which I think would be interesting and for which I could supply all or most of the bottles, depending on what folks have), I would volunteer my home in Brooklyn, which is in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood and about a half-hour from mid-town Manhattan on the F line.
From the UK it might be possible for me to bring a small number of 1970s: one or two of Cockburn, Croft, Delaforce, Hutcheson, Noval, Sandeman, Warre. To be discussed in your new thread.
After new thread is started I’ll delete this post, to keep this thread on-subject.

I'd be very interested in attending a 1970 tasting when I am next in New York, although there are only the nights of Feb 13 and 14 that I could participate. Of these two dates, Feb 14 would be the best for me, but I can understand why that may not work for everyone!
Jay - I love the idea of tasting both the Taylor and Vargellas from 1970. If you would be happy to supply the bottles and allow me to contribute towards their cost, that would be really great.
After tomorrow, I will not own any 1970 vintage ports so won't be able to easily contribute a bottle of my own.

Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th February 2008
- Wednesday 13th February 2008 highly likely to work for me.
- Thursday 14th February 2008 is being broached, in a roundabout sort of way, with the boss.
Re: Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th February 2008
And I now have, in classic female form, an answer that is yes and no and both and neither, allowing any change of mind to happen before, during or after the relevant day. So the 13th would probably be wiser.jdaw1 wrote:

I've been looking for a previous reference, but cant find one. Apologies if I've missed it.
Have any of you brave male warriors considered that the 14th February is Valentines Day, and your better halves will probably delight at the thought of you lot having a boozy Do, rather than 'wine'ing and dining them?
Just a thought. I'd hate to see blood...

Subsequent posters have hinted at the problem (did you notice references to the “boss†?), and we’ve agreed on the 13th for a reason. So yes, we have “considered† it.AHB wrote:I'd be very interested in attending a 1970 tasting when I am next in New York, although there are only the nights of Feb 13 and 14 that I could participate. 1970 horizontal: five confirmed
I see Jay, EricD, AHB, Mr & Mrs W. Which is five, and maybe Sean C. as a sixth. Jeff has yet to report back on the word from his boss, which, if he adopts my solution, might mean eight.jfacciol wrote:We are up to four confirmed with a possible fifth (Sean C). I can accommodate ten folks so there are six/five places left.
Mr Wiseman only is delighted to accept
Mrs W now sends regrets, claiming that being with her mother outranks a port tasting. I don’t know; what’s the world coming to?; etc etc continued page 94.jdaw1 wrote:Mr and Mrs Wiseman are delighted to accept your invitation to a horizontal 1970 port tasting, chez vous, on Thursday 14th February 2008.
Using my new spectacles I now see Jay, EricD, AHB, Mr W (aka jdaw1), and maybe Sean C as a fifth. Mr Ghi and proto-Mrs Ghi we know to be no-shows.jdaw1 wrote:I see Jay, EricD, AHB, Mr & Mrs W. Placemats: 1970 horizontal
And, just because it encourages tingling of my taste buds, draft of placemats (therefore embodying an ultra vires selection).
Unfortunately, I cannot attend but if maximum coverage of the 1970 vintage is sought then I could sell someone a Dalva and a Royal Oporto (neither on the list above) at an extremely attractive price.
Getting them from the UK to NY would be someone else's issue.

we have plenty for the current number of people …
Thank you. But we have plenty for the current number of people, and our host has capped that at ten. Fourteen singles and a magnum is as many different flavours as ten of us are likely to need in an evening.
We could use some more folks
We are up to four, possibly five. We could use some help!!
I am endeavouring to chase same.

Have we posted on FTLOP? I know that there are a number of FTLOP members in the NY/NJ area and they may be able to join us.
I am also dropping emails to a couple of people I know who might be interested, but the date is proving to be a bit of a challenge.

TPF and relevant links
Just to be clear, on TPF you are not only allowed to include relevant links, you are positively invited to do so. Carry on.
Please blame me and not Andy.
We've been down this path before and I know it is all good here, but when putting in our rules of the road months ago, this was one of them.
Whether Julian, Alex, Eric or Jay would like to apply a post in the FTLOP's Portugal Travel, Food & Offline Planner Forum, please feel free to do so.
Although I would like to have attended as well, since I will be seeing you gents in Boston a few days earlier, I don't want to abuse the hospitality. If there are any particular 1970s that you are seeking, let me know. The only ones I can't part with are the last of my '70 Niepoort's & Nacional.

Roy,
There's no problem with the links rule on FTLOP, it's a rule that you've been clear on for some time and one that occasionally gets missed but I don't think causes any hardship.
If I get the chance then I will encourage Jay to post a general invititation on FTLOP, but I may not be able to do so for a couple of days.

Roy, it’s your site and your rule
[Drifting further off topic] Roy, it’s your site and your rule, to have and to hold or to ditch and ignore. Why not tell us why it is there?
Jay,
Thank you for being magnanimous!
At the end of your planning, if you have a seat left, I might be able to swing through NY after Boston to attend. It would be an honor to meet you and share a great 1970 that is not included in your lineup. I don't know yet if I can even make it though, but should know no later than Monday. It is a matter of reconfiguring plans and I hope to be successful.
Again, my sincere appreciation!

We Are Up to Eight
We are now up to eight participants; Ted and Danielle Zang have joined us and are graciously bringing a bottle of 1970 Nacional. Roy has also graciously offered a bottle of 1970 Niepoort. Combine these two bottles with the seven that Julian listed in his draft placemats and we are well set for eight.
I could still accomodate two more folks so, if anyone is lurking out there and is still undecided, please let us all know. There would be no problem at this point in laying on more bottles. There could be a problem if someone joins us in just the last couple of days before 14 Feb as most of my stock is in storage just north of Hartford, Ct.
I am planning on supplying bread, crackers and cheese for the first couple of hours while we are doing serious tasting. At that point, my thought is that we can order in food if there is interest. There are plenty of excellent takeout joints nearby (excellent "real" pizza, or at least pizza made by Italians; excellent Lebanese; very good Thai; and so forth).
My thought is that we would start at 7 pm, although I would have no objection to starting at 6 pm if that was better for folks. I will forward my address to all of you shortly along with a breakdown of costs for the five of us (me, Julian, Eric, Alex and Bob) who are not bringing bottles.
What are everyone's thoughts on decanting times for the proposed nine bottles?

ultra vires
- My suggested bottles were chosen at semi-random, and entirely ultra vires. Please do allow better reasoning about bottle choice. AHB may well have something coherent to say.
- 7pm works for me.
- An alternative accounting system would assign a value to all the bottles being brought, whether by our host or otherwise, with payments then going from those with sub-average bringing to those with above-average.
- You are doing plenty. Should I seize ancient powers and undertake to bring a selection of cheeses and breads?
- Please speak of glasses.

I'm very happy to go with the flow over the choice of ports we drink on Feb 14th - I am just thrilled and delighted to be visiting a foreign city and to be able to share some mighty fine ports with people I have and have not met before. It always makes travelling more bearable when this happens.
Jay and I have exchanged a few emails about possible ports, my only specific request was that I would love to be able to try the Taylor 1970 blend against the Vargellas 1970 SQ. I'm delighted to be able to try for the first time the Nacional (thanks Ted!) and the Niepoort (thanks Roy!). Other than that, most of the ports on the original list are ones that I have not drunk in the last couple of years since I do not generally drink many from the 1970 vintage - I'm not really sure why that is, it just seems to happen.

Julian, ancient powers? All very mysterious. Anyway, it is a kind offer to bring the cheese and crackers but let it stay with me as I am the host.
On glasses, I have picked up 72 of the tasting glasses to which you introduced me. It would probably be helpful if you brought a few extra in case of any breakage.
