Why is it called an Offline
Why is it called an Offline
Jdaw prompted this by objecting to the use of the word on the label's created for the event known as The Deeper Underground Offline.
I have no idea how this word came to be used. I also have no idea whether or not it should be hyphenated as 'Off-line' or not.
Does anyone know the origin, meaning and correct punctuation?
For the record, I'm with Jdaw on this one. It's stupid.

Go on Derek, I'm curious. What did you think it might of meant?
As Alex said, it merely originated from people 'On-Line' saying that something couldn't be done until I'm/we're 'Off-Line'.
It wasn't a huge jump for people to start saying that we'll need to get together Off-Line,etc,etc.
Are you having some mid-life Epiphany, were you're looking at the word, wide-eyed, asking questions...

To be honest, I haven't given it much thought at all until today and just assumed it was a general wine/port lovers name for a tasting of any kind. I hadn't made the intelectual leap to associating it with tastings organised by Internerds like us. (have I just invented a new word?)
Mid-life Epiphony? Perhaps. Or maybe it's the lack of alcohol

I first encountered the term when engaging in a conference call some eighteen months ago. In that context it simply meant muting each party's telephone to have a confidential discussion. To that extent it bears no similarity to this Forum's usage. That, being face to face, is something I first noted on the Roy Hersh site.

It may be drivel, but it's not meaningless.

The term off-line has been used on wine sites since I joined WineSpectator more than five years ago. VinoCellar, Wino Depot, FTLOP, eBob and Tom Cannavan's site all use it.
