On Monday 19th January 2015 we gathered in the Red Room of the Boot and Flogger to drink some Fonseca, including a bottle that had been drawn from an imperial on Saturday 17th (discussion).
Mature red colour, but with no bricking; 95% opaque. Initially some bottle stink but 2 hours later this was showing lively redcurrant on the nose. Fruity entry, big on the palate - fierce and aggressive - with lots of fruit and good complexity, but the fruit is slightly stewed although nicely fragranced. Some acidity and heat shows on the aftertaste before a very enjoyable chocolate and dark fruit finish of decent length. This needs a lot more time to soften and develop. 88/100. Decanted 24 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
