I'm sorry to hear that. But if you're interested in the '98 Warre Cavadindha (which was included in the lot), have a look here:Martin Peeters wrote:Good on you Gerwin, I lost the 18x Ware'sOne minute before ending they came over me. Re: Latest buy
I got the 04 from the German merchant for 22,50 Euro all in, but the 03 from the Portuguese merchant was more expensive due to higher shipping fees: 34,60 Euros (16 € for the bottle, 3,75 € for packaging and 14,85 € for the shipment). But since I wanted to close gaps in my Niepoort LBV wine ladder I chose to ingnore the shipping fees.djewesbury wrote:We'll done. Good purchases. Fair prices?

Still good prices. Not too bad I guess, I did not totally realise that there was 21% VAT to be added to my bid (not the auctioneer's fault, they did indicate it, I just overlooked). In total, including shipping I paid about €41 a bottle. The bottles are in pristine condition, so I'm happy with it.djewesbury wrote:We'll done. Good purchases. Fair prices?

So a consensus that I'm bold then.
Is that bold in the Charles Hawtree/Kenneth Williams way or bold in the daring dawn raid way, or the threw himself out the window convinced he could fly way?
The price is not disastrous, for retail.

I've bought it now, you could have lied. Or let me down gently.DRT wrote:How did the flying thing work out?
Anyway it hasn't got a poor write up for a 97. It is part of a strategy to get a few cases a year and also replace what I drink from the stash with odds and ends of something similar from what turns up locally. That way hopefully I get a decent stash of cases for my sere and barren days. I have drawn the port line at the turn of the century, but I liked those 03s so much I may have to rethink.
Re: Latest buy
Good price for BBR-equivalent to the retail price at ND John when I last bought the D97 there.

I've no idea as I have never had it either, but at £22 and change a bottle less 25% I thought it worth a punt. I liked other vintages of this I tried but have never quite worked out why this is an early maturing vintage port, seems just like most other vintage port.flash_uk wrote:I've never tried the Vau 2003 - is it any good? Oh, a consistently good drop from splits a decade ago. No doubt that, in full bottles and from UK storage, it should serve as a more than worthy replacement.

The Vau looked too good to miss - I bought 6 a couple of months ago from the website. I bought some (well, OK, enough) Tesco BOB '94 this time around, and will send it to Seckford's. I feared the supply must come to an end soon. As there is a suggestion that early and late examples of '94 are different, perhaps some early examples of Tesco '97 could be bought, with a view to comparing it to late '97 as an experiment? But perhaps the '97 will not be worth having, and the '94 supplies must last until the '00 comes out...
I suspect (hope) that buying in mild winter months from Tesco Wine Direct limits Tesco's ability to mishandle the wine on it's delivery route from Porto to me. Any thoughts?

I think of little else but Tesco's delivery chain. I think you are right to buy in winter months as it seems to me this gives less chance for Tesco to deliver something which tastes boiled. Incidentally I have a theory that some of the rather stewed bottles which have appeared in the tasting notes are as a result of shoddy handling in the supply chain.DaveRL wrote:The Vau looked too good to miss - I bought 6 a couple of months ago from the website. The 97 will presumably be at about the same price as the 94 and I would always favour the 94 over the 97 but at £15 a bottle (on offer) it would still represent a bargain whichever vintage it came from.
#nodilemma; leave it as long as you can, but if you can't wait, so what? I was only £18.

Re: Latest buy
I had always assumed that the 1994 vintage was bought as one (or perhaps 2 or 3) large parcel, shipped to the UK and then stored in Tesco's own warehouse. One of the benefits that SFE would get with a deal like this would be some clear cellar space, ready for the next vintage.LGTrotter wrote:I think of little else but Tesco's delivery chain. The condition of the bottles - and I agree that they are variable and some are quite stewed - would then be entirely down to Tesco's ability to store and transport port properly. Perhaps the moral of the story is to buy only when the new vintage first appears on the shelf and so is as freshly removed from the VNdG cellars as possible.

Re: Latest buy
I'd be surprised if Tesco did this. They tend to want to minimise inventory (and the need for warehouse space), and so would prefer to have regular smaller shipments.AHB wrote:I had always assumed that the 1994 vintage was bought as one (or perhaps 2 or 3) large parcel, shipped to the UK and then stored in Tesco's own warehouse. Another half dozen of the Tesco 94, still on offer (25% off). Panic buying on account of the 97 being spotted.
