Borges vintage 1955 -something wrong
Have anyone had a bottle of Borges vintage 1955 and something else in the bottle? When I decanted my bottle during Easter, first it look like a white port and then turbid and muddy like dirty water (see www.vintageport.se and under Borges). The cork was an original cork with Borges in it but saying Vintage 1980 (sic). The port taste like an old colheita and not at all as a vintage. Have anyone had the same experience with Borges 1955?

Without being there, hard to say. It could have been infected by a bacteria when bottled and that has affected it.
As for the cork, are you sure it was 1980 and wasn't just a very hard to read 1955? Old corks tend to be very hard to read sometimes. Can you post a pic?

Certainly sounds very strange; Do you have any pics of the capsule before the bottle was opened?
Am wondering whether genuine and just very strange, or perhaps topped up and recorked by unscrupulous seller - probably not very likely though - any info on provenance, whether was an individual bottle or do you have others from the same case/vendor?

Borges VPs tend to age fast, so an old-tasting Bg could be any year ≤1985.
When 1955 was bottled, the 1980 corks didn’t exist.
• It could be a careless re-corking, circa 1980s, using the cork that was to hand, and perhaps introducing infection.
• It could be careless relabelling of a 1980.
• It could be deliberate relabelling of a 1980.

I have no other bottles and it was the first time we enjoyed a Borge 1955( see www.vintageport.se).
I did not look specially before I opened it so I did not notice any pics.
The cork was a genuine Borge cork and nothing specially to see but saying vintage 1980 and I do realized that this cork did not exist 1955 but it did not taste as a vintage and we drank it all 3 of us who are writing www.vintageport.se so we had a lot of experience both of vintage, colheita and old tawny.
I guess a careless re-corking with infection.

Could it have been a 1955 colheita bottled 1980?

Yes, we discuss this seriously but if so it was very old indeed. Something was wrong but this is maybe one quite possible guess and maybe the best we can do. Unfortunately we could not read the Port Institute identification just the figures.

Did it have an old-style or new-style selo?Sten wrote:Yes, we discuss this seriously but if so it was very old indeed. Something was wrong but this is maybe one quite possible guess and maybe the best we can do. Unfortunately we could not read the Port Institute identification just the figures.

When wandering around Oporto it is common to see bottles sitting in shop windows in full sunlight in the summer months. Could this be one of those?jdaw1 wrote:Could it have been a 1955 colheita bottled 1980?

Yes it could be a window bottle. I did not think of that. I bought it on internet.
I do not know how to send a photo of the seal but just a very little piece remain of it so no use. I will ask my son-in law to send it.
The cork just say: Borges Vintage 1980 so no use to send that I suppose.

Here are pictures of the cork (which very clearly states Borges Vintage Port 1980), and what is left of the selo.
