1966 Fonseca
Brick red and mature in appearance, burnished bronze. 40% opaque. Delicious fragrant nose of mixed stewed berries in a gentle syrup and a lovely flowery overtone - but just a hint of higher alcohols. Nice satin texture on the palate with a nutty entry that carries sweet cranberries and russet apples. The palate has fabulous complexity with a spot-on balance. The balance runs through to the aftertaste and leads on to an immense finish that lasts for ages. This is such a good wine. A second mouthful brings sweet fruit yet still with dry tannins at the core. Perhaps lacking slightly in concentration and sweetness for a higher score, but that is splitting hairs. Very, very good. 96/100. Drunk 23-Apr-15.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
