First usage on TPF of that word. Gloating would have been met with scorn, but as it was done quietly, I thought that it should have been acknowledged.LGTrotter wrote:The significance of this being?
There could, perhaps, be a subsidiary competition for those noticers.

What an enjoyable thread! I love the sight of bomphiologia in the morning (with apologies to John Milius)

I wish to withdraw my objection to the use of dithyramb in the context Julian used. I have given the matter careful consideration since the seventh of July and think I have been too pedantic.jdaw1 wrote:I agree that the usage went slightly beyond the strict classical meaning. But in the sense of a song to the god of wine, I hoped that it was close enough.LGTrotter wrote:Yes, perhaps I should have checked that no Classical Greek dancers or poetry composed along particular lines had been offered as an intermezzo for slides. I presumed too much.djewesbury wrote:It has been used entirely correctly. An extra point to Julian for your being such a bad sport.LGTrotter wrote:I am pleased to say that I do not have to look up dithyramb to know that it has not been used correctly. I think.

Re: The Great ‘Forsooth’ Duel
Sorry. I was at Covent Garden watching a production of Tristan and Isolde in which the singing was all absolutely faultless, in fact quite sublime, but nobody had been given anything to do but 'stagger about and lean on a chair'. Very disappointing. It made the long slow boring bits, which Wagner was really good at, quite long and slow. But what an ending.

I think you should post this here; http://www.theportforum.com/viewtopic.p ... t=Concerts which I discovered quite by chance when trying to see if Derek could add 'odious' to his list on this thread. Alas no, three times in total, once by myself and the other was in reference to Mr Paul Gadd. Quite.

I love the way you're revitalising old threads Owen. I'm very pleased to see that Derek enjoyed The Pogues in 2008. A friend of mine is in this popular beat combo. He wrote the music for Fairytale of New York. Christmas is his 'ker-ching' time of year.

Re: The Great ‘Forsooth’ Duel
You know the great Jem? Wow, no really, wow. Did I mention how attractive you are looking? The Pogues are one of those bands who I used to go and see plenty in my youth, terrific nights out, but those were the days when I thought there was something cool about being a drunk. It feels very uncomfortable seeing Shane on telly these days, remembering cheering and singing while he delivered a set lying down sucking at a bottle. Was it mainly stage fright? I had a feeling it might be.djewesbury wrote:I'm very pleased to see that Derek enjoyed The Pogues in 2008. A friend of mine is in this popular beat combo. Klatsch is from another language and the use of otiose in this context is deliberately provocative.djewesbury wrote:Hurrah! An excellent word. Showing up the more otiose members ofjdaw1 wrote:klatschthough.

Re: The Great ‘Forsooth’ Duel
Yes, once again I agree with all you say, Owen. I once commissioned Jem to build a radio telescope in Lough Neagh and an upside-down shed at the loughshore. The telescope received radio waves from magnetic storms on Jupiter. The shed was meant to look like it had been inverted in a hurricane. The night we erected it we had force 12 winds (hurricane) and had to stand behind it, all pushing, to keep it upright. I like to think we precipitated the hurricane.
Yes, I share similar stories regarding the great Shane. In the late 1980s I marvelled at him. I met him once years later and he was, predictably enough, reasonably tedious.
I thought a klatsch had to involve coffee. I exclude you from the general otiosity hereabouts, of course, old chap.
