My last purchase consisted of a mixture or port and of table wine, in bottles and half bottles.

How many bottles and half bottles of wine and port did I buy (answers in the form of a bottles of wine, b half bottles of wine, c bottles of port and d half bottles of port please)?

I will give high / low clues in response since no-one will know the answer other than the people who store my wine for me!

It was. While I was pondering my last guess, I was quite certain that someone had already guessed "drinking" and that it had been ruled incorrect. So certain that I didn't even bother to check to make sure. That's what was causing my confusion over the letter D, as you might imagine.

On to AHB's question. I am confused by the fact that we must wine bottles first.

As you may have noticed, we do a lot of random guessing in this thread.

I do have a pair of 1997 Novals, but they're reserved for a special tasting that is currently unscheduled. I wish I had an extra that I could open! So sadly, no I did not open a 1997 Noval today.

I'm afraid that I didn't think very far ahead with this question, as I have no good clues to provide that would not make the answer obvious. I'll try to think of some while drinking a glass!

24 half bottles of Cos D'Estournel which were an attractive price and were just what I needed to replace my mature claret stocks - there are times when you have to have a decent claret to wash down the pasta and the last half bottle I had before that was opened at the weekend.

Not SW85 and not K05.

The correct purchase has been mentioned, just not the correct bottle.

The cork was - surprisingly, at least to me - in pristine condition though it broke in half during extaction because the corkscrew I was using was too short. Not a drop of leakage from this bottle as the Selo was still intact, not stuck to the cork, and still pliable. There was a stamped metal capsule covered by a stamped hard wax capsule, and both appeared to be in excellent condition.

Nose: Somewhat spirity with a very faint hint of what might be smoke. Initially strong hints of honey, but those seem to have blown off at +5 hours. An early nose of sweet grapes and soft red fruits also seems to have blown off at +5 hours, which is a bit disappointing as there's not much left.

More notes to follow as clues as needed.

Correct!

Here's the rest of my TN, which I will also copy into the TN section.

Color: More tawny than red, and fairly light. It gives the distinct impression of a very old, very mature vintage Port.
Nose: A strong impression of honey is followed by sweet grapes and soft red fruits. Very slightly spirity, but not so much that it interferes. This all changed after 5 hours as the honey and fruits nearly vanished and the nose became spirity.
Palate: Very soft and elegant with a very faint smokey note. There's more "sweet" to it than anything else, but it's not a pure sugary sweetness but rather the remains of a sweet fruit compote. Some caramel in the mid palate. Rather light body weight, and mildly spirity. Some faint tannins are still present, but just barely hanging on. Only light acidity as well, so this probably doesn't have many more years left.
Finish: Warm but short, with only faint fruits and light tannins. Very late impression of green apples.

Drink now, as it is fully mature and quite probably fading. A pleasant bottle all around. Don't be scared off by the 82 - it's still a good bottle of Port and quite a steal for the $30 I paid. In fact, I went back and purchased the last 2 bottles that Benchmark Wine Group had in stock.

I moved to Chesterfield in April 2001 and since then have driven well above the average number of miles per annum through work and almost weekly trips to Edinburgh. If all the miles I have driven had been around the equator, how many times, to one decimal place, would I have circled the earth since I made the move south?
