Told you.
jdaw1 wrote:(The preparatory work for the next question is underway.)
As some of you doubtless guessed, the ‟preparatory work” consisted of decanting a bottle of port. When, for the second time, I used a new piece of technology, that which I hereby call a ‟decanting spoon”.
My decanting spoon is a white plastic spoon, with a long handle and a small bowl, originally intended for feeding a newly-weaned child.”
How is it used to assist decanting?

I cannot imagine JDAW decanting without his usual funnel and filter paper so I am assuming this is additional to those items. Is the spoon used to prevent an air-tight seal developing between the funnel and the rim of the decanter, thus providing a gap for air to escape and port to flow at a good rate?

That part correct. But

Perhaps it is to sit between the filter paper and the funnel in order to speed the flow of the wine through the paper

AHB wrote:Perhaps it is to sit between the filter paper and the funnel in order to speed the flow of the wine through the paper
Exactly so. With the handle of the spoon pointing up, and the bowl of the spoon orientated in the narrow part of the funnel such that port won’t sit in it.
AHB’s turn.

One question did occur to me. October was rather a modestly busy port acquiring month for me - what volume of port did I acquire? (To the nearest 1cl.)

Let’s call that four cases is 36L.

Pedantry requires the clarification that the total volume is assumed to be as stated on the labels of the vessels purchased. Where no label is attached to the vessel, standard sizes have been assumed to be 37.5cl for a half bottle, 75cl for a bottle, 150cl for a magnum and 55,600cl for a pipa.
jdaw1 wrote:3,600cl
This is incorrect.
DRT wrote:3,975cl
Too low. Remember, this was a modestly busy month.

Still too low. This was not an average month, this was a modestly busy month. It was also the month in which I cleared out the combined cellars of my deceased father and grandfather and brought the cellar contents home.

Upper boundary established, I added less than 50 cases to my cellar last month.

Maybe I am a simple fellow of ascetic nature, but for the Wiseman household acquiring 159 bottles = 13¼ cases in one month would be more than ‟modestly busy”. Pray sir, how many busier months have you ever had?

Port buying business is measured in the Bridgeman household not on a relative scale, but absolute one. On my absolute scale, this month was only modestly busy. Other months yet to come may prove busier.

Useless, the pair of you. It's Bonfire Night, which is traditionally wet. It's raining, so what will be the highest rainfall in the UK for 24 hrs to 21:00 on November the 5th? Location optional but it will probably be in Scotland.

17mm - probably in Oban - in about 15 minutes just after the sun comes out at lunchtime.

Well done for the multitude of guesses. Actual answer was 38.6mm in Capel Curig, Wales. AHB is the closest in both amount and location.
