Motion passed with zero objections.
I guess 54 (Aberlour) is the distillery.

Aberlour is not the distillery.

To assist those not familiar with Whisky distilleries or the SMWS:
It is one of
these and the SMWS numbers can be found
here.

I think this quiz is now as easy as it could possibly be and I will not be offering any further clues for a while.
I bought this bottle on the same day that I enjoyed a Dow 63 that had been bottled in the Vaults in Edinburgh, now occupied by the Whisky Society. On that day, Andy Murray won Wimbledon.
The Whisky Society's bottlings are offered on a monthly basis.

Nope.
Despite saying that I wouldn't be giving further clues, I appear to have given a good clue, above, quite inadvertently.

Ah yes..
(Patrick Grubb selections madeira list arrived today and has held me spellbound)
I am also a little unsure about being given a reading list prior to participating, I hope I don't have to produce evidence that I have imbibed the course material.

Think of it less as a reading list and more as a key.
You are closer in one way; but further away, too.

Or I could just say "yes you are closer numerically but further away geographically", which is, well, so prosaic. Which would you prefer?

Oh I'm going to bed. The standard of guess is well below par tonight. I have provided an adventure of a question, a veritable jigsaw puzzle, with clues all slotting together to lead you to the answer, if you could but see.
But you have thrown away the lid of the box and forgotten what the picture was. And my jigsaw remains unfinished.

Keep them gnomic.
I knew someone who threw away the box of his jigsaw and did it underside up. Now that is hardcore jigsaw.
Sleep innocently.

I had already also said that it was a Speyside. In fact it is a Speyside Spey (further clue).

80 or 88. (Next guesser to guess one of them, at which time I become deemed to have guessed the other.)

It appears to be a subdivision of Speyside, according to the SMWS (see box below map). I'm guessing it would be a distilery that is right next to the Spey itself.

I am somewhat hampered in my guesses by the numeral five packing up on my laptop and me being too idle/mean to resolve this. I could just write it out I suppose or hope it forms no part of the answer.

I think I have worked out that this is the whisky that was released on the first Friday of the month in which Daniel visited the SMWS in Edinburgh. But the option to list the First Friday whiskies doesn't seem to work so I have no way of finding out what it was. Does it work for anyone else?

I think it is the July 2013 First Friday Whisky, perhaps June.
