unfortunately, since dave's place is still under construction, and we're drinking almost a bottle a person, it'd be inadviseable for a few of us, especially those living in Siberia, УлаанбааÑ”šÃÂ°Ã‘€ ...... Jay has been the most gracious host to offer his home in brooklyn.

Jay, do you think we have room for one more?

Subir says he'll bring some dry reds for dinner. (shall we pick the italian place again or shall we try something different?)

So a recap

Attendees: Julian, Jeff, Jay, Josh, Steph, Eric, Subir, Molly, TBird (Mike), Dave.

again my most humble gratitude to Jay for offering his home.

Wine line up:

* Nacional:
o 1983 Eric;
o 1985 JDAW;
* Fonseca:
o 1983 Jeff;
o 1985 Jeff;
* Dow:
o 1983 Jay F;
o 1985 Josh (SushiNorth);
* Warre:
o 1983 ?; -- Can someone track this down?
o 1985 JDAW; -- Adoptable?
* Graham:
o 1983 Josh (SushiNorth);
o 1985 JDAW. -- Adoptable?

Food: TBD.

Btw, we are at 10 and probably the max amount where we can all get a decent tasting and not intrude on Jay's hospitality.

I'd like to cap it off here at this number. (With one exception for Ronnie)

Questions

⠊¿â Å  Do people prefer adoptions or cash settlement? I have a splendid gift for our host, so consider that sorted. (Jay: don’t refuse. Splendid implies very appropriate.)

⠊¿â Å  I would rather call upon Jay’s Gould Campbells, ’83 and ’85, than have Warre. Warre is widely available, and I have drunk and enjoyed much of it. A GC comparison would be newer to me. Am I alone in that view?

Ten is the most that can be squeezed around my dining room table.

Jeff, help me out, who is Ronnie?

Julian, can you bring your box of glasses (I promise to freshly wash mine right before the tasting)?

I will get the GC 83 and 85 shipped down. If there are any problems, I will let the group know.

It is a kind offer by Subir but I, at least, can't drink both a bottle of port and a glass or two of red wine. I will just melt into a puddle, although other folks are welcome to give their livers a strenuous work out.

Ronnie is Dave's wife. In case she'd like to join..

I'll ask subir to keep the dry reds hopefully under 13% alcohol.

I need to be on the sober end of it, too; last time was way too much port for me.
jfacciol wrote:With Steph we are definitely eight. If Differentdave joins us, we are nine. So it sounds as if we do need the 1983 Warre or another 83/85 combo.
I notice I'm down for two bottles (Graham's 83 & Dow's 85); if I bring two, one of them would need to be adopted. If its an issue of fairness next to the Nacionals, I'd suggest that -- while they are surely awesome wines -- perhaps they are overkill.

I think we need to establish an agreement about adoption/splitting costs.

I count three (possibly four, if differentdave is in--by the way, is he?) folks not bringing a bottle of port (this includes Subir as a dry red is a kind extra but an extra nonetheless).

In addition, two of the bottles are much more valuable than the others.

Let's see how many folks are actually coming and then agree upon some method to compensate Eric and Julian for part of their cost and to compensate me and Sushinorth for contributing three bottles and two bottles, respectively.

I actually have the Dow's 85 on hand, the Graham's 83 I just saw in the shop but I'll need to go get it (will get two, one for the cellar and one for our tasting; and if people like it I'll know just where to get more!).

I've got detailed pricing on either bottle, so whoever wants to adopt can have it for exactly what I paid.

NN85: Zachys, Los Angeles, March 2006, lot 1208, $315 per bottle. G85: Sotheby’s, New York, 3rd Dec 2005, lot 430, $88 per bottle. I’m happy to bring the NN85, somebody can adopt the G85.

The bottles up for adoption are the Graham 85 from Julian, one of Sushinorth's bottles, and the Dow 83 from me. I will supply the two bottles of Gould Campbell.

If there is a fourth person, perhaps he/she can contribute a bit towards the two Nacionals, or at least Eric's.

Where do we stand on attendees? Specifically, is differentdave coming?

What is happening with adopting the 83 Dow?

And what's the story with the Nacionals?

Without differentdave, we have 9 people and 10 bottles... would it make sense to drop a house altogether (perhaps Dow or Graham) and have adoptees reroute funds to those bringing the nacionals?

It sounds like we are at ten. Is the Transiberian Express functioning (i.e., is Eric coming)?

I haven't seen a post from him in this thread for a while.

Ooh, those are good prices! I don't know if I will have a chance to go there, as I'm not staying long and am at the mercy of my hosts, but I'd definitely like to try to pick up some of the Ferreira if I can!

Eric, that is a great idea as I am going to propose both a 1980 horizontal and a Ferreira vertical and I don't have the 1980.

Is this where we're at?
Port, finalized:
  • Fonseca:
    • 1983 Jeff;
    • 1985 Jeff;
  • Gould Campbell:
    • 1983 Jay;
    • 1985 Jay;
  • Nacional:
    • 1983 Eric;
    • 1985 JDAW.
Port, the adoption/attendance zone:
  • Dow:
    • 1983 Jay (Needs Adopter);
    • 1985 SushiNorth;
  • Graham:
    • 1983 To be adopted by TBird;
    • 1985 JDAW (Needs Adopter?);
I'd propose a DEADLINE of tuesday evening for anyone who wants to adopt and confirm attendance (I'd count tbird as confirmed, based on his frequent attention to this thread) -- at which point we sort out what's left and consolidate houses so that we don't have two with adoptions pending.

Oh yeah... got a little overeager about 85 approaching, popped a Warre's 85 for the storm, just to get warmed up :D I'll post tasting notes as soon as i retrieve them.

Damn..I need to pay more attention here! I thought this horizontal was called off.. :crying: I would have tried to attend.

On another note ..be careful about the wine at Vickers in RI, I raided them several years ago and managed to get some decent stuff but it is all stored at super hot temperatures. Most of the Port sits around in the store baking. I picked up several bottles from the store shelves which were baked! I had better luck with the cases of 85 Ramos and 80 & 85 Ferreira (stored in the basement). I left the 1982's.. they are probably okay. The 1966 Sandeman is no good ..all of the bottles stored downstairs are not refrigerated at all so it's a total crap shoot ... in the summer that store is hot!

If adopting a bottle or space becomes an issue I can bow out (which would be slightly odd cause at one point in time I was hosting this event)
Sorry for confusion and headaches guys.

No confusion, 10 bottles, 11 people is perfect, can you chip in for the Noval nacional? Especially since Steph is probably going to be driving a few of us home.

Would make the average price about 90$/person

Port, finalized:

* Fonseca:
o 1983 Jeff;
o 1985 Jeff;
* Gould Campbell:
o 1983 Jay;
o 1985 Jay;
* Nacional:
o 1983 Eric; -- Dave can you help chip in for this?
o 1985 JDAW.

Port, the adoption/attendance zone:

* Dow:
o 1983 Subir;
o 1985 SushiNorth;
* Graham:
o 1983 To be adopted by TBird;
o 1985 Molly;

Also, would any of mind if I bring brown paper bags for a blind before we start taking notes?

I have better than bags. But I prefer sighted: put aside your prejudice and judge the contents of the glass.

Well, how about a compromise... Can we label the bottles A/B/C/D etc, and Jdaw, when you make the placemats can you include letters on them (DOW 1985 (F) )? Those who want to taste blind can do so with letters for their glasses, those who want to know what's what need only use their placemat.

I think really the only concern is that, with 11 people, there'll only be a glass a piece so those tasting blind may not realize they're drinking the nacional til its too late!

If we do it blind, we can do better than that. I have labelled bags—courtesy of DRT.

But it is a team decision. Team: vote.
  • Sighted: JDAW;
  • Blind: SushiNorth, g-man.
If we do it blind, somebody (probably Mrs Facciol) will put bottles in bags. We’ll taste. When everybody has sampled and guessed, we’ll reveal. Then there can be further tasting, sighted. Then food.
