That's choked.
Or maybe chocked. Come to think of it.
He thought its smell unpleasant.

Closest yet. But why?

There was also one answer that had potential, but, sorry, just wrong.

Do they get pregnant?

A woman came and sat next to him at the bar next smelling strongly of perfume. And talking about her failed relationships.

It was an oyster shed. We were the only customers. And I don’t wear perfume.

You think everything's bisexual.

This Warre is corked, shame there is a good port underneath struggling to get out.

The ice upon which the oyster stood was tainted?

All the oysters were fresh from the sea, naked, dressed identically. The small ones were delicious. Why? What is it about the small oysters?

No. They are hermaphrodites. Please excuse the previous silly playfulness. It (the bisexual part) was in an article I recently saw about oysters. I'll have to look that up again. In the meantime, no, it wasn't male.

The oyster had an observable quality which made it predictably less sweet. What is that quality? Mr Somerset is getting very warm!

Are you finding Julian's obsessive compulsive vivalve - oops, I mean bivalve - proclivities starting to wear thin?

It smelled of Royal Oporto.

Do I have to guess the exact age at which they become too old for Julian?

Ten years?

25 years?

Yes! That's it! The one thing that was different was its age. Julian wanted just one more, and the oyster man wanted to impress us. So he pulled out this HUGE oyster and proceeded to tell us about its age (it was 15 years) and that the larger they are, the older, and also more sour. Yes, Julian likes his bivalves pert and neat.

But we have an answer. :(
Finally we have a comprehensive description of the numerical properties of the square. A little too slow off the mark this time Glenn.
only just seen this. Not quite comprehensive though; diagonals too (previously mentioned by jdaw) and also opposite outer mid-pairs as well as corners. Four of these cases could be generalised to "the sum of all four values in any single selected position while rotating the board 90 degrees each time".

[oyster guess deleted, I was too late typing this!]
