I hereby file a motion for a Section 43b Ruling by the TPF One Quiz at a Time Independent Adjudicator*.

Section 43b states: the Independent Adjudicator shall be a TPF Admin who is not the Chief Admin or the Admin who makes the rules of the quiz.

I typed "French humour" into google and my web browser returned a fatal error. Will try another route.

This was not a guess.

I put "French Comedy" and got a list of 49, more than half of which weren't actually French. Only one of the others I recognised - "Amelie", which I'd already guessed. I only tried Pink Panther to annoy you. Really, this is an impossible quiz.

French humour - whatever will Julian think of next?

Green Card (on the basis that any film staring Donald Depardieu is as funny as any real French film could ever be - i.e. not funny at all)

Donald?

In which case - Cyrano de Bergerac.

No and no.
jdaw1 wrote:I’ll join the film theme. There are several film comedies that are excellent, including the obvious Monty Pythons. But one of my favourite films from this genre is French. Yes, an award-winning French film not about Sartre, sex or smoking!
So you know:
  • Comedy;
  • Python-esque;
  • French;
  • Award-winning.
There can’t be many of those, but, because I’m nice, here’s another:
  • Released in a year with very few declarations.

My first guess qualified on every level, apart from the name of the film.

Correct - Glenn's on.

Nicole Kidman playing a woman totally losing it over 'The Others' being in her large country house and mucking up her war-time existence with her kids, whilst her husband is at the front. Nobody else really gets a look in as Kidman takes over the whole film creating tension from a deteriorating sanity. Slow-moving but also a slow-burner.

The Others is a good movie, but I agree that it is rather slow. I'm not quite sure how to classify it either, as it's not tense enough to be a thriller, not scary enough to be horror, and not fast enough to be action. I suppose it is in some ways the purest form of drama, untainted by other cinematic styles.
DRT wrote:Glenn, is the answer 11th July 1987?
That would be the answer to one potential question, but not the one I had in mind. ;)

Continuing the movie theme, my favorite movie of all time is from (by all accounts) a poor Port year. So bad, in fact, that I have only ever seen 2 references to Port from that year and both were of questionable veracity.

Which movie?

An excellent movie and one that I have enjoyed more than once, and from an appropriately lackluster Port year, but no not my favorite. I'm old, but I'm not that old.

(Besides, everyone knows that the Casa de Santa Eufemia 30-yr old White Port is actually a 1973 Colheita.)

Resuscitate with more clues?

Re: One quiz at a time

Posted: 09:34 Sat 09 May 2009
by Alex Bridgeman
So, to summarise:

What is Glenn's favourite film?

CLUES TO DATE
1) From a poor port year - only two references see to ports from this year and both of those reports were of questionable veracity
2) Not the Sting (1973) - younger than this
3) Not Get Carter (1971) - the remake (2000) would be closer in age
4) Not On Golden Pond (1981) - wrong genre but closer in age

THINKING
Poor port years since 1980: 1984, 1993

Films in 1993

I guess Fatal Instinct...

AHB wrote: THINKING

I would rule out 1980 on the basis there were 37 declarations, almost all of which were the shippers classic blends.

1984 had 19 declarations, mostly SQVPs

1993 had one, and two others claimed by broadbent in error (as recently confirmed by the relevant shippers)

Schindler's List?
