Nice twist, something that you might have done before but aren't sure. I was thinking (a slow event)

Removed the entire capsule rather than just cut away the top?

Quite often I pull of the whole capsule.

Not related to the capsule.

(Answers soon: I’m off to bed in ten.)

I think we have been deserted. However I have to stay up and start a new thread on an old chestnut. Night.

One could do this same thing to un-fortified wine, but, as with the Port, if I have done it before, it has been very rare.

No. Not involving the used glasses.

Use previously, multiple times.

The done thing is, rightly, frowned upon. By me, amongst others.

Now it really is good night.

So the done thing isn't the done thing. As it were.

I was watching the second part of the BBC NI interview with Ian Paisley. Lovely to see them all stabbing one another in the back.

You had white port and poured some water into it. Like you might do with white wine in summer.

It could be argued that the problem was that something was mixed with the Port, but that might mislead.

Not water; not lemon.

No. Well, some went in the bolognaise, but that also happens often enough.

The origin of the thing was, I suppose, laziness.

You drank it through a straw directly from the bottle as you had no clean glasses or other vessels at hand.

Correct, but borderline incomplete.
PhilW wrote:or perhaps more specifically, decanted two bottles into a single decanter?
Fuller, better, but later.

First of you two to post the next question is the Question Master.

Mrs W wanted some port for cooking. The remainder of a half of Croft LBV 2004 went into a decanter. It looked just so small and pathetic that another was added as a top-up. Very rarely do I mix bottles. On this occasion, it seems that no harm was done.

New question:

A mathematical port fanatic keeps his port in a (temperature and humidity controlled) safe, the key to which is an electronic 6-digit PIN. As he cannot reliably remember this PIN, he has worked out that with each letter representing a different number, he can add three port houses with the total being a fourth, this total being a six digit number. Unfortunately, he has forgotten one of the port houses. He remembers this:

Code: Select all

   CALEM
   ?????
+ OFFLEY
  ------
= TAYLOR
Determine the missing port name and the sum and hence identify the PIN to the safe to allow access to the port!

Eleven?

Posted: 22:37 Tue 21 Jan 2014

If he knows the total, does it matter? He must remember what each letter stands for and therefore if the result is TAYLOR he knows the combination.

My go.

No. He cannot remember what numbers the letters stand for, however he used to be able to remember the names of the four port houses, and so could then easily solve the puzzle to get the PIN.

It's not as hard as it may seem to make progress. A clue at lunchtime tomorrow if needed.

Well my brain isn't functioning at its best, so the only progress I can make is that none of {C,O,T} represents 0.

Also, the set of letters (assuming base 10) is {A,C,E,F,L,M,O,R,T,Y}.

There. I got you started!

Wait... I will make a guess. CROFT?

Cryptographic nonsense. Attack codes at their weakest point. In this example, deducing the code is more work, and less reliable work, than guessing each possible answer. There aren’t many:
  1. Adams
  2. Avery
  3. Cálem
  4. Cedro
  5. Croft
  6. Dalva
  7. Dixon
  8. Feist
  9. Judeu
  10. Kopke
  11. Krohn
  12. Noval
  13. Poças
  14. Roriz
  15. Rozès
  16. Sibio
  17. Souza
  18. Warre
And some are more likely than others.

Krohn?

At which point I'll guess Croft and he'll guess Kopke.
