I'm taking this back since Owen's so tardy. An André-themed question: what bottle of sherry have I opened? Name the producer and the style please.

This can only be a Palo Cortado. By Lustau?

Produced by Lustau, yes, but sold as a BOB by Sainsbury's. Not a Palo Cortado.

Hm, if it were my turn, then I would guess the sherry we drank in the Mosel. But, alas, it is not my turn.

I already said it was from Sainsbury's. But yes, it's an Oloroso - the Lustau Sainsbury's Oloroso Blend. Good gear. Your go.

A tawny port, or at least one of those dated barrels which turned up. 1900 Krohn?

I surmise that since this is a note taken by the Man from Christie's, the date will be c.1975 or slightly later. I think the fact that the note taker stresses that it is browny rather than tawny is a red (ahem) herring. This is perhaps a wine that would have been in its tertiary phase in the 1970s; a 1904 maybe? 'Bite' suggests some tannins that have lingered long (although it could just be alcohol); anyway I'll guess Dow.

The image’s filename, “20150104_19760212_TN_1.png”, might allow the attentive to know the auction date.

Not 1904. Not 1934. An interesting Port.

No. Twentieth century.

I have tasted VP from this shipper, many times — many, and too few — but not of this vintage.

Browny rather than tawny? Maybe a Colheita.

Random guess based on the above, probably flawed, logic. Krohn 1927

That's the extent of your clues? That Taylor is the best guess? You're right, nobody is reading that correctly. Nobody has achieved the level of transcendental enlightenment through which you view the totality though.

OK. Taylor is the closest guess yet. Some have explored this clue by looking at names associated with Taylor: Krohn, Fonseca, etc. This has not revealed anything meaningful. Julian has had this shipper many times but never this vintage. Is it an undeclared vintage, I asked, which received a Frankie Howerd noise in response.

I think this is an undeclared vintage, but I don't know offhand what vintages were undeclared early in the century. Perhaps it was a wartime vintage; that would make it suitably unusual.

A shipper associated with Taylor other than ones acquired by TFP, recently or historically? Perhaps before exhausting that option I'll say Croft. 1915?

I wonder if the shipper is Taylor but the port is Vargellas. In which case, it could be a 1921, as I think Taylor did not declare in that year. But was the practice of SQVP in non-declared years established in those times? I don't know.

Yes, of course this is what it must be.
