1991 Smith Woodhouse

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Burnished copper in colour, 50% opaque. Rather smelly and a bit sulphurous on the nose, suffering from mild bottle stink but enough to swamp all other smells. Sweet and smooth on entry, with sweet redcurrants dominating. Some acidity provides structure and combines with the fruit to give an elegant and fruity port of medium body. Air mixed with the palate releases more of the unpleasant bottle stink flavours. A lovely aftertaste of toasted redcurrants and junipers and a long, long finish of red licorice. 86/100. 11-Oct-15. Decanted 31 hours.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

2026: Quinta das Carvalhas 80YO Tawny
