What did you get for Christmas...

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

...that is port, or at least wine, related?

I was very happy to receive a bottle of Vargellas '98, a bottle of Bonfim '96 and a DVD of the Sideways film that I look forward to watching (plus Hugh Johnson's pocket wine guide for '98).

Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

I only received one bottle this year - a curiosity called Becherovka from the Czech Republic.

Allegedly, this 38% clear spirit is more akin to Gin or Geneva than it is to Vodka, and a quick sniff reveals a strong nose of Cinnamon.

One to drink with tonic perhaps??

The only thing wine related was Hugh Johnson's 2008 wine guide as a stocking filler - bloody good one though.

'Vintners Tales' from JR, I had not made it to wine when they first screened (but it is in colour!).

Absolutely Nothing!!!

On the wine/Port front, that is. Debs did buy me a Sony VAI0 Laptop though, so I cant complain. It'll take a stiff upper lip to see it £200 cheaper in the sales of course!

I wonder if the Crusting Pipe has Wireless coverage? With this beauty and my 5 Mega Pixel Mobile phone camera, we could go live?

(Is this too technical for you, Jules? :D )

Somebody got you a ten year old version? I know you like your Ports a bit past it but this is getting silly.

Oops. Shouldn't have written the post after several glasses. I did, of course, get the 2008 version!

Although I had some mixed cases of wine and a wine cooler plus a surgical cork removal kit the most interesting to me was a book called the wine behind the label Michael Broadbent is ok if you buy first growths on a regular basis but my funds don't stretch that far. This book surprised me the vinyards close to the house we have in France I thought we'd found the best ones yet so has this book .It has wines that start at £5 a bottle and I think it is superb.

I failed mention that later I received a bottle of the World's cheapest (yet still legitimate) Bourbon, but more properly a rabbit-style corkscrew.

I have seen these in action before but never had the chance to wreck corks with it myself. I have to say that I'm rather impressed. Don't think I'd use it on VP or old Bordeaux and Burgundy but for ripping corks out of low to mid-price stuff it is incredibly quick.
