1970 Dow
Bottled by Courtenay Wines (International) Ltd of NW11. Deep red mahogany, appearing mature; 90% opaque. Bramble fruit and smokey leaves on the attractive nose. Crushed nettles on the palate; the mid palate brings lots of bramble fruit and milk chocolate tannins. A good dose of acidity balances the dry but fruit filled palate. Great layering of flavour and subtlety on the palate with a lively late profile. A touch of heat on the aftertaste from the powerful acidity, followed by a long and warming finish of dried cherries and sour dried cranberry, all infused with a lasting milk chocolate. Delicious, and showing much better than the bottle tasted just 2 weeks ago at the Berry Brothers Port Walk. 93/100. Drunk 11-Dec-15. Decanted 2 days.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
