1963 Dow

A poor bottle, mid-shoulder with a deteriorated cork and signs of seepage. When opened, the cork was dirty and slightly loose.

Barley-sugar orange in colour; 40% opaque. Gentle nose of barley sugar and straw, a bit unclean. Modest entry, sweet and slightly oxidised so as to deliver a tawny experience rather than a fruit forward vintage port. Good levels of acidity hold the palate together. This port delivers a long finish of burnt sugar and bitter fresh orange peel. Great length, but distinctly tawny and atypical in style. 83/100. Drunk 19-Dec-15. Decanted 6 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
