NV Vieira de Sousa White (Very Old White)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Reputedly over 100 years old. Olive wood brown in tone with a wide green rim; 10% opaque. Tawny on the nose with varnish, beeswax and some hints of pineapple. Balanced entry, nicely oleaginous with good acidity that keeps a fresh balance. The acidity build and supports gentle lime and ripe apricot flavours, mixed with a soft coffee. Pleasant and languid, this builds well on the palate until you eventually have to give in and swallow. Soft spun sugar flavours with a touch of caramel and a quick flash of acidity make up the aftertaste and lead to a delicious finish focused by the lingering and slightly bitter lime and grapefruit zest flavours. This is a fine soft and elegant sipping port. 89/100. Drunk 26-Sep-16. Decanted 36 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
