1977 Dow

1977 Dow (Magnum)
An oversize crowd—possible because the bottles were all Magnums and Tappit Hens—gathered on Wednesday 1st February 2017 at the Boot and Flogger, to taste these large-format 1977s.

30% opacity, Red with an orange rim. Nose a little sharp. Quite a sharp entry on the palate, mild hint of VA.

Mature rose-red colour; 60% opaque. A touch of VA on the nose adds a sweet and sour twist. Sweet and smooth on entry but then the VA bites and creates an unpleasant sour and bitter edge to the palate. Dry and bitter on the aftertaste and finish with a good length of sour cranberry. Pleasant enough but a disappointing magnum compared to the way this port can show. 81/100. Decanted 2 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
