2021 Virtual Tasting #14, Thursday 26th August

Post by nac »

So, the planned virtual in late July didn't happen. I was on holiday and forgot to arrange anything, so apologies.

There's a late August date in the planner, so opening up a list well in advance.

Suggested theme: "A bottle of Port you got for a steal"

Good idea. Unless someone comes up with something better, let's go with that!

Borges, Castelinho, Real Vinicola? Or does it have to be drinkable? At any rate, please count me in.

Whip out your hidden Castelinho gem.

I don't have any steals as good as what you get in England, but I have a couple of good ones.

Remember that it isn't necessarily a steal just because it was cheap... See (my post elsewhere which I'll find later and edit in here) on my Cruz 1989 "bargain" - which is NOT what I shall be opening...

The ones I'm thinking of are a combination of low price and good to high quality. I.e. $26 for a 1985 Churchill VP, or $20 for any of 1987/1995/1997 Porto Souza VP.

I will not be opening any of my $120 magnums of 1977 Gould Campbell VP, or my $150 magnums of 1994 Taylor VP, though I think they both qualify. I'm not Julian; I cannot drink a magnum in one sitting.

Yes please (though as I have a hearing on the 26th, please accept my apologies in advance if I’m a no-show).

Looks like we're going with Justin's suggestion, so expect to see a number of M&S bottles.

If I remember to take it back to London, mine will be the £25 Croft '75 purchased in 2019 from an auction house in Hull.

Otherwise. M&S 2007 or 2011 or Sainsbury's TTD 2000...

Great theme Justin!
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

I still haven't made a decision on this! Tempted to crack one of the bottles of Six Grapes that I picked up for under a tenner each.

I have a few LBV Christmas presents, one of which I might open, on the basis they were "free"!

Other avenues having been closed by circumstance, I will be on 1995 Reccua LBV bottled 2002. E14 from Garrafeira Nacional back when it was easy to access such things.

A "steal" bottle has been selected - a de la Rosa "Limited Edition" Tawny, £10 from Waitrose a couple of years ago. Intending to make a brief appearance only as have been quizzing the last two evenings.
