1977 Gould Campbell

Post by jdaw1 »

An emergency was declared for Monday 14th April 2025, at the Boot & Flogger.

A 1977 was proffered, so another was, so another was, and the planning attracted towards an evening of 1977s. This is good.

Big brutish nose. Spicy. Massive concentrated wine on palate. Big. Did I mention brutish? Drink 2027-2077.

The nose on this I did not like but I appear to be in a minority on that – having said that the actually taste and flavours were extremely enjoyable

Gould Campbell 1977. Dark - intensely dark - red but with a centre that is still opaque. Black fruit, bramble and pipe ash. Exquisite palate, dominated by the ripe black cherry. Slightly green tannins still sit in the middle of the fruit. Green tannins give a chew to the aftertaste and finish. Long length of lemon, lime and black plums. Fabulous, but weird - 48 year old Port should be more mature and have more complexity than this.  87/100.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
