2011 Churchill

Post by rich_n »

Tasted at the Churchill lodge in Gaia.

Maroon red to brick red at the rim, very opaque.

Light red fruits on the nose. A touch of minerality and a herbal note. Maybe honeycomb and a little orange? Fairly muted.

Lush entry on the palate. Dominated by red fruits and a caramel and milk chocolate orange on the early to mid palate. Very aggressive tannins and acidity mid palate - extremely drying. Eucalyptus and a medicinal red cherry note along with a tonne of liquorice. The finish has a slight off note that I can't place. Maybe oxidation. Not pleasant but the rest of the port is great so it's tricky to work out what's going on here. I think this could be a really great port with big aging potential but based on this experience it's not one I'd bank on until I get another chance to try it - I really want to like this more than I do.

<Edit> Churchill's staff replaced my glass. This is now singing. The off note is gone and this is a fabulous wine with huge potential. V good, maybe excellent.
