1940 Graham Single Harvest Tawny (bottled 2019)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Graham 1940 single harvest tawny, bottled in 2019. (Cask 1 / Bottle 427). Opened with Eric, Stewart and Andy at Stewart’s house. Dark brown colour with an olive green rim. Vinagrinho on the nose with a little beeswax underneath. The palate delivers immense power and intense acidity, backing up the lemon and lime citrus and the thick nuttiness of the flavours. It’s the immense acidity that demands the attention, but despite the power there is a balance to the wine that is so impressive. Grapefruit and lemon oil on the aftertaste of a stunning and glorious Port, the like of which is seldom bettered. 98/100. Drunk July 2025.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

From a sample brought to me the next morning... first time I've had the pleasure of trying this Port!

Medium brown color with tawny highlights, some greening at the rim. Nose is rich and generically tawny with significant vinagrinho. Big, bright palate. Fairly intense acidity. Drying finish due to the acidity. Lots of citrus flavors, but more focused on the citrus than any specific fruit. (I.e. yet more acidity.) Finish is long and pleasant. I could use a touch more sugar to help balance the waves of acidity, but it's still a very impressive Port. One of the best - if not the best - Graham's Single Harvest Tawnies that I've ever had. 95 points.

Thanks for sharing, Alex!
