1995 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

A bottle from CMAG's Vesuvio 10th Anniversary Case, opened on Wednesday 13th February 2019.

Deep red in colour, opaque and with a narrow rim. A swirl releases lots of dark cherry fruit. Deep black cherry on the palate with lots of dry tannins that gives a chalky and dusty charcoal texture. The fruit and charcoal are unbalanced, but are individually deep and powerful. A big aftertaste of black cherry with a rich and lingering finish, with hints of green on the late finish. 90/100. 13-Feb-19. Decanted 4 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

BigLove (John M.) is hosting a 1995 Tasting this coming Saturday in New Jersey and the Vesuvio is one of the ten bottles that we'll be tasting. I'm looking forward to seeing how this and the other bottles perform.

In March 2019 was at a vertical of Vesuvio in NYC (Many usual NY suspects in attendance!): 89, 90, 91, 94, 95, 96 & 97. While the 1994 was the WOTN for me with 1995 2nd, overall the group had 1995 in a near dead tie.

Also distinctly recall the 1989 has an= smokey pine resin hint; someone knew the grapes had been pressed with stems on which rather made sense.
