Wine Society 70 bottling tasting

Post by idj123 »

I appreciate that there have been a number of prospective tastings launched recently but following the triple vertical (SW/GC/QH), last week, I was impressed by the performance of the SW 70 (WS bottling) and in fact, I’ve always been impressed by the WS bottlings and wondered whether there might be any interest in having a WS 70 bottling tasting? I note from ‘the book’ that there are 11 different shippers bottled by the WS in 1970, of which I believe I have four of them. Between us have we got enough to complete the set? We could always supplement by similar such bottles from 66 (for which apparently 12 shippers were bottled).

So, at this stage it is just an expression of interest I’m after (date TBA but probably later this year) and what such WS bottlings you have. Priority will likely be given to those holding required bottles.

Would be interested Ian, but from memory my WS bottles are not 70, so stick me in as first reserve maybe?

Love the idea/challenge. I have quite a few Fonseca 1970. I think that is it but will check at home.

I am game - I think I have D70 and S66 plus some 1960's if the theme is expanded

Willing to play; would need to adopt; hence would understand non-eligibility.

Should a WineSoc representative be invited?

I love the idea, but I drank my last Wine Society bottled 1970 (a Martinez) last year. All I know I have now which are Wine Society bottled, are from 1955 or earlier.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

2026: DR Very Old White, Graham Stone Terraces 2011, Quevedo Branco 1986 b.2026

Sounds like a good idea to me. Will have to check what I have; might have some '70, or at least 6x (W70 confirmed, TBD any others).

Not sure I've ever had a WS bottling. Not much shows up in the states. Other bottlers do.

n.b. Perhaps the title should be updated to "Wine Society 1970 bottling tasting" (or '70); without the apostrophe, while my own fault, I initially misread as "Wine Society 70-bottle tasting" and was thinking you were aiming for a huge event!

The 1970 horizontal last year was a 96-bottle tasting :)
(more if you count the reserve bottles, or less if you only count different ports, then "only" 58 bottles)
