What is a “head fake†?
I appreciate that the UK and USA are two countries separated by a common language, but can anyone tell me what a “head fake† is supposed to be?
Re: in defense of Port
in basketball, a head fake is when you move head in one direction, but you fake the defender to go the other way.

Strange though it may seem, in English that would be described as "throwing a dummy"g-man wrote:in basketball, a head fake is when you move head in one direction, but you fake the defender to go the other way.

Get your mind out of the gutter...it refers to a practice game of basket ballDRT wrote:pick up games?g-man wrote: I'm going to use that during my pick up games

I think "unscheduled" or "unofficial" game might be a little more accurate. The term derives from "picking up" a couple of other players in order to form a team, and then playing a game against another such team.Andy V wrote:Get your mind out of the gutter...it refers to a practice game of basket ballDRT wrote:pick up games?g-man wrote: I'm going to use that during my pick up games
And it's not just basketball... I used to play pick-up Volleyball regularly down at the gym.
Head fakes occur in a lot of sports as well. Look one way, move the other, and you've executed a head fake.

Julian does this a couple of times towards the end of the night after the 3rd bottle of port.Glenn E. wrote: Head fakes occur in a lot of sports as well. Look one way, move the other, and you've executed a head fake.
He begins nodding off like he's going to hit the table, then BAM, head fake, he pops his head right back up

For those familiar with a more european sport than basketball, its a fencing "feint."
It's been recently popularized by Randy Pausch in his "last lecture" at Carnegie Mellon before passing away. 6 million + viewers will do that to a phrase.
