This would not be the first :tpf: 1977 horizontal: Are the residents of New York able to take another 1977? There would be some repeat bottles:

  • Non-repeats:

Preferred dates? Extra 1977s?

Oh i believe I could, as i missed the first one!
But the end of 08/beginning of 09 is starting to look devilishly packed with NY tastings...

You say that as if it is a problem...

I would enjoy a 1977 horizontal and will be in NYC from Feb 25st through March 1st. (New York City, between Feb 25 and Mar 1, 2009) Friday, Feb 27th would be an ideal date for a tasting for me!

Thanks, but I have Warre and the object is to drink up my port.

I have several 1977s that I could choose from for this tasting. I have the Dow, Fonseca, Royal Oporto, Taylor, and Warre VPs as well as a Porto Rocha Colheita.

Since JDAW already has the Fonseca,Taylor, and Warre that leaves me with the Dow and Royal Oporto as my options unless the rest of the attendees would like to try the Rocha Colheita. Any of them would be fine with me.

I can also bring a half a bottle of the 1977 Royal Oporto Colheita, but it didn't make for good drinking. Maybe it'll be better in 3months!

It’s a vintage port tasting, so I think save that for a colheita evening.

Hi. Is there a date set for this tasting yet? I am free beginning the 2nd week of January. I could either purchase or adopt a bottle in this case.

I don't think a decision on the date has been made yet. I'm hoping for Friday, February 27th as that's the weekend I'm in NYC and available to participate.

Let's do that.

Target date for this tasting: Friday, February 27
EDIT -- We're changing this date.

Could the tasting on this date not be the ’77 horizontal? Re-enfatherment could happen on this day, and most of the ’77s are mine.

Should we swap it with the Grahams?

I care not what the theme of the tasting is on Friday, February 27th. I care only that a tasting occur on that date!

Graham's... 1977... "stuff Julian doesn't like"... no wait, that last one would leave us without Port...

how about a "Port Julian should put aside for his new child" tasting?

If we drink it, won't that make it significantly more difficult for him to put it aside?

Should we start a new thread to discuss the theme for this specific date? I think this thread is more suitably used to find a date for this specific theme.

Go for it. As i mentioned in the four months in ny, even a dinner with a few bottles of VP would be fun.

I'll never make a port tasting within two weeks of another port tasting so I pass on whatever is decided for Feb 27.

The 1977 horizontal has been moved to a date, to be determined, in May 2009.

I believe for a few of these tastings we'll be doing lots of adopting to help unladen our port brethren.

May 2009 hoves into view. Wifely instruction says late May, the last week of which works well for me? How for thee?

i have two interesting 77's: guedes and dow. I appreciate that we are looking at least six weeks out from yesterdays tasting. Had you considered the 77's serving as beverage for a series of dinners (perhaps 3 to an occasion) rather than a single tasting?

Might I propose something ludicrous? That Fonseca, Taylor, Warres and Graham be left out (as they are common sights) and we focus on some of the smaller houses?

I think that we are trying to drink up Julian's port so it behooves us to do so. On the other hand, if too few folks volunteer their livers, then it could make sense to limit the tasting to more unusual houses.

I am. I am also busy during the day on Saturday, and am hoping that a business trip does not get between me and the tasting (and the other thing I have to do saturday).

The reason i suggested leaving a few things out is that
1. I think Julian will have no trouble drinking those other 77's (with breakfast), and
2. I think we have access to a lot of neat 77's and with only eight or so reliable tasters in NY I want to be sure we can properly enjoy it.

I will not be sure whether I can attend until the last minute; therefore, I am withdrawing from the tasting. If I am free and there is still a spot available, I will jump in. Otherwise, please do not count on me.

There’s another small problem: my records. We drank some of my 1977s! I’m missing some stuff. Sorry.

All that I actually have is Warre, Ferreira, Smith Woodhouse. Yikes!

Given that we also have a shortage of people (just me and Josh), that might still scale acceptably.

Hmm, lots of overlap (I've SWC and Warre, too). I have Guedes 77 and Dow 77 available. Any thought on whether we should keep it on this sparsely attended date or perhaps shift to ... the TWC Anniversary on June 20th! :D

After May 27th, I shall be free, and I will either be drinking for joy, or drinking from disappointment, in either case I will be drinking, but Saturday does not look as likely for me. I have a Croft 77 on hand.

Do we have a venue for this tasting picked out?

If we do a thursday we might be able to goto la sirene.

le petite abelle was very good too.

En route home after the Remarks by the Lucasian Professor of Port Drinking event, I stopped at Smiths of 79 MacDougal Street between West Houston and Bleeker, wherein the steak tartare was splendid, though small I had two.”  After an explanation of port tongs they, including the chef Doug Psaltis, seemed very willing to host one of our tastings.

Objections? Better plans?

Provided they can be reasonable on corkage (and perhaps lift a glass with us), they appear entirely suitable with entrees in the $22 range and a 4-star on Yelp.
