I tried lots and lots of wines from celebrated wineries across the finger lakes region. I came back with barely a case of wine. Gold and silver medals do not make drinkable juice. I hope this list will help you pick out some decent NY wines (drink local!). These are their names, and if you trust my advice be sure you don't pick up the dry or reserve if i've listed the semi-dry. In many cases the lower priced wines from a winery were better.
Hermann Wiemer Gewurztraminer 2007
Belhurst Semi-Dry Riesling 2008
Dr. Konstantin Frank Semi-Dry Riesling 2008
Dr. Konstantin Frank Celebre sparkling wine
Red Newt Riesling 2007
Earle Estates Honey Mead "Contemporary" - tried it on a lark, very nice for a mead.
Cheeses:
The cheeses were better than many of the wines. In particular, look for:
Lively Run Chevre (goat) (EXCELLENT)
Lively Run Feta (goat)
Sunset View cheddar curds (cow) (EXCELLENT)
if you want something crazy (minerals, woody and a little funky), try Sunset View's Samuri 5y aged cheddar. (cow)
they both ship their cheeses, you can get em online -- apparently Sunset View couldn't quite seal a deal with Murrays -- murray's loss!!
(thanks, g-man, for the winery recs)

Re: A trip to the Finger Lakes
Oh, and the reds? bad. The Port? THE WORST.
