We are a sad bunch and frequently abbreviate stuff. SC (Stevie Cage) once did an abbreviation thread on WS (Wine Spectator) for his MP (Millennium Post). This is TPF's official abbreviation thread, especially useful to the newbies who could be baffled. I will start with a few, please add in replies, with descriptions, and I will update this post, I may get around to putting links in as well:

BMHR- 3rd generation " X X Howard Read", in my case, XX being Benjamin Michael. In the case of my grandfather, "Keneth Wilson.." and my father "Andrew Kenneth.." My son is "Edward Donal.." and I am "Benjamin Michael.."

As I neither keep elephants (or eat liver & Chianti..) - nor punish pianos; you might note that the H is a the name of a monarch of which we have had several, but none recently; and the R is one of the few main characters in Macbeth to survive to the end of the play.

WS - Wine Spectator (for those who have not seen the light)

Not forgetting:

DM - Decanter magazine (for those who wish to be left completely in the dark)

Oh yes, and on the subject of spelling, it is Marilyn Monroe not Marylin Munroe.

I've thrown a few more legitimate ones in. Mostly due to seeing the constant use of abbreviations like F85, which we know is Fonseca 1985 but some poor unsuspecting newcomer could be just baffled. I've shown that as Fnn. Please make suggestions for any others like that that we use on a regular basis.

I have changed the confusing ‟Frnn” to ‟FrYY”, and likewise for other houses. If so minded you might wish to add NYY and NNYY, as well as CYY, CrYY, SYY, VYY, SWYY, GCYY, and QHYY.

Please be careful about using your admin rights to moderate posts in such a way. A suggestion should have been made and I would probably have agreed with you and changed it myself. I don't like the changing the colour so I've changed it back but I've left the YYs as they make sense. I've also put your suggestions in.

Apparently, this was meant to be Edward rather than Ethelred. How was I supposed to know that? Surname updated as well.

After a mild disagreement over this topic, it seems appropriate to move it to the top and allow admins to update it. It's changed from a whimsical muckabout to something of use. Please feel free to add suggestions and any of us will add at our pleasure. My alter-ego promises not to get too precious about it.
