Very old adverts

Post by uncle tom »

It occurred to me that ancient adverts for port might provide some useful insights into the structure and nature of the market, many years ago.

But a trawl of Victorian adverts - in the main, marvellously detailed engravings; revealed many dubious tonics, but no port - or claret, for that matter.

It seems that all the classic adverts for port post-date the first world war.

Anyone know of any really old promotional material - 100yrs+

There is a lovely display of old adverts in the Ramos-Pinto lodge in Gaia. I didn't make photos when I was there, but maybe someone else did? I'm not completely sure about the age of those adverts.

Yes there are some really old ones there, but I dare say some are a bit riske (sp?) and may not be proper to post online if you catch my drift.
