Ramos Pinto Lágrima Tinto?

Post by JacobH »

InfoPortWine refers to an interview in a Portuguese wine magazine with Bento Amaral, the head taster at the IVDP. Apparently, in addition to the 10-year-old white gaining authorisation, there's also going to be a new category for Lágrima Tinto Port. The only version seems to be by Ramos Pinto (see pictures here). Does anyone have any ideas what this is? Is it a super-sweet Port or something else altogether?

I thought Lagrima's (tears) were white ports being that tears are white unless you're a vampire. Perhaps they left the skin on during fermentation of their white port to get the red color.

It's a Rose Port but from what I've been told they didn't want to call it Rose so they called it Tinto. I've tasted it and it's actually one of the better Rose style of Ports I've had.

The only issue is the label is difficult to tell what it is, as Tinto is in very small letters.

Ah, thanks for that. I guess the clue that it’s not a standard Lágrima is in the colour! Is it just being made as a normal rosé Port (i.e. as a light-coloured ruby) or are they blending their normal Lágrima with some red Port?
