The annual Christmas event, this instance on Thursday 15th December 2011, as always in The Bell, Wendens Ambo, Essex CB11 4JY, and as always with the theme The Unknown Shipper and His Peculiar Friends.

Subdued on the nose. Strong flavours of seaweed and iodine. Long finish. Good madeira, but I struggled to adjust my palate between port and madeira at the end of the evening.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

I didn’t take a note but I remember this being the much better of the 1860 Madeiras (who would have though I could end up writing this following that tasting?); much more expressive in the mouth with a very long finish full of those tropical fruits that characterises Bual. Certainly the easier Madeira to try with the Ports, too.

It was much too late in the evening for me to appreciate this so I donated it back to the man who donated it, which I think was the best thing to do.
