Hello,
I am new to the port world and would like to pose a question to the board. Has anyone had the opportunity to try this vintage? It seems like '90 was a bad year for port in general, but my father wants a case of a port from each year his kids were born.
Also, if anyone would recommend a different '90 port, I'd love to hear it.
Thank you,
Grant

I don't think i've ever tried Bomfim 90.
I can personally say that Graham Malvedos 90 is rather good (in my opinion, preferable to the Vesuvio 90 which might be the other obvious choice for vintage port).

Vesuvio '90 was not a great port, although it is perfectly respectable. In my opinion, the Malvedos '90 is a shade better.
Like RAYC, I've never had the opportunity to try the Bomfim '90.

Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Re: 1990 Quinta do Bomfim
Thank you two for the replies! I will put the Graham's on my list then, and hope someone else can come along with a comparison.
Edit* I also wanted to ask, how long could a '90 port last? Would it have to be drunk fairly quickly? I know sometimes there is no easy answer but I'd love to hear some opinions.

A difficult question to answer precisely, but i wouldn't have thought you need to rush.
I'm sure that it will still be fun to pop a cork on any of these 1990s in 40-50 years!
When will they be at their peak?
Depending on whether you like your port on the more mature side or more "robust and fruity", for the Malvedos i'd tentatively say anytime between 2015 and 2035? (I last had one in June/July last year - didn't feel to me as though it was too early to be opening it, but i did think that it might be better with a few more years of age).
These Swedish guys have reviews of the Dow 90, Vesuvio 90 and Malvedos 90 and give a slight edge to the Malvedos, though there's little in it.
On the other hand, Cellartracker reviews give the Bomfim 90 a slightly higher average score than the Malvedos 90 and Vesuvio 90.
But i don't think this screams that there's one standout wine that's head and shoulders above the other - Graham's flavour profile will be on the sweeter side and Dow's on the dryer (but this port, so it's all relative!) and Vesuvio will have a nice presentation case!
