Hello,
i just purchased by auction a bottle of Messias 40 Anos for ~40 Euro. But i can't find nearly any information about this port on the internet, no tasting notices and the wine is very rare at shops. It's even missing on the Caves Messias homepage. The price range for the found results was between 80 and 130 Euro.
Could you provide me with some additional information? Does anyone actually knows this port? I'm not sure if i made a good deal ..
Thx,

Cave messais 40 anos is typically around the price you paid for it and I would say is a fair price.
Garrafeira nacional has it for 60 Euros but I find them on the pricey side.

Look at these portuguese sites - they are much more pricey than 60 Euro:
http://www.portwineportugal.com/messias ... -wine.html (130 Euro)
http://www.winehouseportugal.com/pt/mes ... -anos.html (140 Euro)
How can it be that there are so big differences in price?
But the most important question for me is: is it worth it?

You can certainly find places who would be willing to sell you something for 1000$ a bottle but doesn't mean anyone will buy it.
I said 40 E is a fair price for a 40y tawny, I personally never had a messias 40 but if their 10 is any indication they do make a decent tawny on the sweeter side.
As with the all important question, as I am not you, I have no idea if it would be worth it for you or not

Re: Messias 40 years old
You paid a fair price - perhaps even a slightly cheap price - but whether it was worth it you will only know when you open the bottle and taste what is inside. I hope that you will find you really enjoy the port and find it something quite special. The 40 year old blends are supposed to be the top of the range of tawny blends made by each of the port houses so I would hope that you find it enjoyable.
When do you expect to open it?

As g-man said, some places will just put a high price on a bottle to see if it will sell. If it sells, they make a huge profit. If not, they mark it down to sell it, put it up on an auction website, or sell it to a different store.art05 wrote:How can it be that there are so big differences in price?
In the U.S., 40-yr old Tawny Ports typically sell for between $110 and $140. That doesn't stop stores from trying to sell them for $170-$180, though. Messias is not a top tier producer, so I would expect to pay less for their 40-yr old than for one of the big names. 40 Euros seems like a very good deal to me... 60 Euros is about what I would have expected. I wouldn't pay more than 60 Euros for a Messias 40-yr old without getting a chance to try it first.

For typical 40 yrs from the bigger houses I'd see 80-130$ here in NY.Glenn E. wrote:As g-man said, some places will just put a high price on a bottle to see if it will sell. but for smaller unknown houses, I typically see 60-80$ which is why i say it's a fair price. (this isn't my distro prices either which knocks off 30-50% off the price)
