2012 De Krans Cape Vintage

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

De Krans Cape Vintage 2012, Calitzdorp, South Africa. Sealed with a T-stopper. A bottle bought from the Butcher Shop and Grill in Sandton. Deep red in colour, opaque but with no hints of purple as might be expected from a port so young. Fresh raspberries and a sprig of fresh picked mint on the nose. Soft and pleasant entry, fruit is restrained and hidden behind a wall of acidity and very ripe tannin. The raspberries and leaf notes appear again on the late palate, which gets remarkably active once held in the palate for a while. A lot of acidity shows on the aftertaste, dominating the early finish, but does eventually give way to a long finish of bitter cranberry. Rather nice, but not in the mould of a serious Vintage Port. 83/100. Drunk 13-Apr-14. Decanted 3 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
