Mz58, originally β = beta. Glorious red, 40% opaque. Nose of burnt sugar. A biggish with strawberry and cherry at start. Then fades, lighter mid- and late-palate
Very dark in colour, deep red and looking to be in early maturity. 50% opaque. Very closed nose, showing simply a little spirit and iodine. This initially shows restrained fruit and lots of evolved elderberry. A harshness to the fruit from the acidity, but the acidity supports the fruit and there are still some gentle tannins. Wonderful strawberry aftertaste and a great finish af good length. Served blind this was guessed to be Constantino. Beta. 88/100. Drunk 03-Jun-14. Decanted 3 hours.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
2026: DR Very Old White, Graham Stone Terraces 2011, Quevedo Branco 1986 b.2026
Noticeably darker than the other offerings but showing balanced ripe fruit with a little liveliness and a nice finish. Likely to be still kicking after its compatriots have faded away.
